Directed by Kookie Gulati, the film is inspired by true events based on the stock market scam by Harshad Mehta, who was often called the Big Bull of the Dalal Street. Ajay Devgn is one of the producers of the film.

This Abhishek Bachchan and Ileana D’Cruz starrer is a return to the financial crimes committed by Harshad Shantilal Mehta during the 90s. Associated with the Indian securities scam in 1992, Harshad Mehta (played by Bachchan) was a stockbroker who believes experts exploited flaws in the financial and banking system to his advantage. He was convicted on four of the 27 charges leveled against him and died in prison in 2001.

This year we have seen release of several web series on various platforms, many of which received considerable acclaim. But Scam 1992 stood out. It was overwhelming by each segment of the audience. It was released at least before the hype but as soon as it came out, the way it earned respect and acclaim was believed. Lead actor Pratik Gandhi became an overnight star.

The release of Abhishek Bachchan’s The Big Bull scandal was postponed until 2021 due to the super success of 1992. This super success of the show directed by Hansal Mehta, however, has left the makers of The Big Bull sleepless. A source says, “Like 1992, The Big Bull is also based on the life of Harshad Mehta.” Of course, the producers of the film knew about the web series, but they never thought in their wildest dreams that Scam 1992 would become the most appreciated show in the history of the Indian digital space.

They are confident about their film but fear that web show lovers will troll it extensively. Abhishek Bachchan’s performance will be compared and his comparison with Pratik Gandhi. Even dialogue and music, along with other actors, will face anger.

According to the prosecution, the bank’s officials in collusion with the Mehta brothers entered into a conspiracy to cheat SBI Caps, the investment-banking branch of the country’s largest lender, to the tune of ₹105 crore within the sale and buy transactions of securities from 1991 to 1992

The CBI, which was looking into the case, stated that there are around 24 suspected transactions. The cash was debited from the account of SBI Caps at the bank’s Mumbai branch, which is SBI’s main branch cash was alleged to be used for the acquisition of shares, but there’s no receipts or physical securities accredited to the account.

According to the prosecution, the bank’s officials in collusion with the Mehta brothers entered into a conspiracy to cheat SBI Caps, the investment-banking branch of the country’s largest lender, to the tune of ₹105 crore within the sale and buy transactions of securities from 1991 to 1992.

SBI Caps routed all 24 transactions via Harshad Mehta and allegedly suffered a loss, consistent with the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), for the prosecuting.

The case against prime accused Harshad Mehta was ‘abated’ after he died in 2001. The CBI claimed the fund diversion couldn’t have taken place without the knowledge of the accused bank officers.

The court, however, accepted the defence arguments that the funds were diverted from the foremost branch of the bank and hence, the case against the accused officers, who were within the securities division, couldn’t be accepted.

“In light of the various gaps and missing links left open by the prosecution, could even get on account of death of Harshad Mehta and thus the discharge of the various accused within the case from time to time, the actual fact remains that the charge of conspiracy couldn’t be proved,” the court said.

The court also noted that there was a serious lacuna within the sanction given to prosecute the officials under the Prevention of Corruption Act.
The CBI allegedly stated that there are many irregularities from Mumbai branch of the SBI has unauthorized credited funds into the account of the late Harshad Mehta.

New Delhi: Harshad Mehta, after his stock market exploits came to light, was under criminal custody in Thane prison. Mehta complained of chest pain late at night and was admitted to the Civil Hospital. He died of a brief heart ailment, at the age of 47, on 31 December 2001.

The ‘scapegoat’ or the mastermind of the 1992 scam? Harshad Mehta’s fall from grace still haunts the family

Mehta, who had gained notoriety in the wake of multi-crore securities scam 28 years ago, was arrested by the CBI on November 9 with his brothers, Ashwin and Sudhir, in the case of alleged misappropriation of Rs 250 crore from 27 lakh ‘missing’ shares of 90 blue chip companies.

On December 21, a special court had rejected their bail plea and remanded them to judicial custody till January 4.

The infamous securities scam made Mehta a household name even for those who had absolutely no inkling about the ways of the stock market.

The scandal may have cost him his place as arguably the biggest and most influential stockbroker in the modern stock market but to the thousands interested in making a career in stock markets, Mehta was god.

Known for his analytical mind, Mehta could smell an opportunity to make a killing. Even in 1996, though already a spent force, his popularity among the youth in Mumbai was stunning. You just had to ask a youngster in Mumbai’s Fort area what he wants to be when he grows up. “Harshad Mehta” – would be an instantaneous reply.

But when the stories against him started spilling out in the early ’90s, there was panic selling and close to Rs 5,000 crore worth of market capitalisation was eroded. For Harshad, his empire collapsed.

His subsequent arrest by the CBI finally broke his hold on the markets. Harshad made a sensational claim that he had handed over a suitcase of cash to then Prime Minister PV Narasimha Rao. Mehta alleged that he had paid Rao Rs 1 crore to get him off the hook in the case while Rao denied any role in the entire affair. The government subsequently ordered a joint parliamentary committee probe in the case and also set up a special court to try Harshad and his cronies.

Even as the trial was going on, Harshad got involved in yet another manipulation game in 1997. This time, he, according to a Securities and Exchange Board of India charge sheet, was involved in rigging up the prices of three stocks – BPL, Videocon international and Sterlite Industries.

While SEBI and the other government agencies probing the financial market scams were certain about his involvement in these manipulative exercises, Mehta was never really punished for his crimes. His lifestyle – though Spartan in comparison to the flashy days – was comfortable.

Every time, there was a mild flutter in the markets – and this continued till the late ’90s – the market grapevine would say “Harshad is back!” Bombay bull Ketan Parekh — architect of the famous rally of 2000 and now implicated for manipulating the markets — was among Harshad’s close associates.

Only towards the last few months of his life, the court’s decision to freeze his financial assets may have landed him in some difficulties. With Harshad’s death, the law enforcing agencies may face a problem in pursuing the securities scam case.

The loss in market capitalisation could not have been ever recoverable from Mehta, but now even a modest recovery from Harshad’s personal financial assets could be a problem.

Harshad’s son, Atur Mehta grabbed people’s attention in 2018 when he bought a significant stake in Fair Deal Filaments, a BSE-listed textile company.

How did Harshad Mehta die?

While he was in Thane jail, he fell ill and complained of severe chest pain. The prison did not have the facility or desire to take him to the hospital by motor vehicle. He was apparently forced to walk to the prison gate despite chest pains and was asked to wait for a long time before a vehicle took him to the hospital. It is said that he was terrified of a major order heart attack while being taken to the hospital. Perhaps if the vehicle had been made available on time, he would have reached the hospital before he had suffered a heart attack. Therefore, death comes in many ways in India, including the unavailability of transport when it is most needed.
