Relations between India and Canada came under severe strain following Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s allegations of “possible” involvement of Indian agents in the killing of Nijjar in September 2023.

A sign demanding an investigation into India’s role in the assassination of Sikh leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar is seen at the Guru Nanak Sikh Gurdwara in Surrey, British Columbia, Canada on September 20, 2023.

According to a media report, Canadian police on May 3 arrested three members of an alleged hit squad investigators say in Ottawa, who the Indian government says had tasked them with the assassination of Khalistan separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in Surrey in 2023.

India has rejected Mr Trudeau’s allegations as “absurd” and “motivated”. CTV News quoted a senior government source as saying that three people have been arrested and charged with Nijjar’s murder.

Court documents show Karanpreet Singh, Kamalpreet Singh and Karan Brar each face one count of first-degree murder and one count of conspiracy to commit murder in Nijjar’s death.

Nijjar, 45, died on June 18, 2023, in Surrey, B.C. He was shot dead outside a Gurudwara. He was a Canadian citizen.

The indictment filed Friday alleges the conspiracy occurred in both Surrey and Edmonton between May 1, 2023, and the date of Nijjar’s murder.

Citing sources close to the investigation, the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) reported that police are actively investigating possible links to three additional murders in Canada, including the shooting death of an 11-year-old boy in Edmonton .

According to sources, the members of the hit squad are accused of playing different roles as shooter, driver and spotter on the day Nijjar was murdered.

The men were arrested during police operations in at least two provinces on May 3, the report said.

Sources said investigators had identified members of the alleged hit squad in Canada a few months ago and they have been kept under close surveillance.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police are expected to announce arrests and share some details of their investigation on May 3.

India rejected Prime Minister Trudeau’s latest comments on the killing of Nijjar on May 2, saying these comments once again reflect the political space given to separatism, extremism and violence in Canada.

Mr. Trudeau addressed a Khalsa Day event in Toronto on April 28, which was attended by some Khalistan supporters. On the sidelines of the event, he told the media that Nijjar’s murder had created a “problem” and he could not ignore it, in an apparent reference to his earlier allegations of involvement of Indian agents in the murder.

“PM Trudeau has made such comments before. His comments once again reflect the political space given to separatism, extremism and violence in Canada, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said at his weekly media briefing in New Delhi.

Asked about Mr Trudeau’s comments, he said, “This not only affects India-Canada relations, but also promotes an environment of violence and criminality in Canada to the detriment of its own citizens.”

India also summoned the Canadian Deputy High Commissioner on May 29 and lodged a strong protest with him over pro-Khalistan slogans being raised at the event in the presence of Mr Trudeau and several other leaders. Nijjar was a Khalistani separatist and was wanted in India on various terror charges.

Days after Mr Trudeau’s allegations, India asked Ottawa to reduce its diplomatic presence in the country to ensure parity. After this Canada recalled 41 diplomats and their family members from India.

India has been insisting that its “core issue” with Canada is the space given to separatists, terrorists and anti-India elements in that country. Following Mr Trudeau’s allegations last year, India temporarily suspended issuing visas to Canadian citizens. Visa services were resumed several weeks later.

Canadian opposition leader Pierre Poilievre has assured the Indian community in his country that he will restore “professional relations” with India if he becomes the next Prime Minister.

Conservative Party leader Poilievre also condemned the ‘aggression’ shown towards Indian diplomats posted in Canada and the growing Hinduphobia in the country.

Poilievre said, “We need a professional relationship with the Indian government. India is the largest democracy on earth. It’s okay for us to have our disagreements and hold each other accountable, but we have to have a professional relationship and I will restore that when I become the Prime Minister of this country.”

Asked about the removal of 41 Canadian diplomats from India, Poilievre said, “This is another example of how Justin Trudeau is not worth the cost after eight long years. He has turned Canadians against each other at home and he has damaged our relations abroad. He is so incompetent and unprofessional that we are now in major disputes with almost every major power in the world, and that includes India.”

Poilievre also condemned pro-Khalistan car rallies at India’s missions in Ottawa, Toronto and Vancouver on Saturday. A Hindu temple was also targeted last night, as the Vaishno Devi Hindu temple in the British Columbia city of Abbotsford was desecrated with anti-India posters.

“Conservatives share Hindu values of faith, family and freedom. Freedom includes the ability to worship without fear or vandalism and I strongly condemn all attacks on Hindu temples, threats against Hindu leaders, for example, aggression shown towards Indian diplomats at public events, which Completely unacceptable.”

Commenting on Hinduphobia, Poilievre said, “I will continue to oppose it and I think criminal charges should be brought against anyone who attacks Hindu temple property or people, just like elsewhere.”

According to the latest polls, Poilievre is favored to become the next Canadian Prime Minister as his party leads the outgoing Liberal Party by double digits and is in majority territory.

New Delhi: Jailed gangster Lawrence Bishnoi on Thursday claimed responsibility for the murder of Khalistani terrorist Sukhdool Singh in Canada. Sukhdul alias Sukhu was killed in inter-gang violence in Canada on Wednesday night. He was part of the Khalistan movement in Canada.

Jailed gangster Lawrence Bishnoi has claimed responsibility for the murder of Khalistani terrorist Sukhdul Singh in Canada.

In a Facebook post, Bishnoi gang said that Sukhu had played an important role in the murder of Gurlal Brar and Vicky Middukheda. According to a report published by NDTV, the gang called Duneke a ‘drug addict’ who was punished for his sins.

The gang further warned that their enemies would not be able to survive in India or any other country, the report said.

Duneke fled India to Canada on forged documents in 2017 and has seven criminal cases registered against him.

Sukhu’s killing comes a day after Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau told the country’s Parliament that there were “credible allegations” linking the Indian government to the killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a prominent pro-Khalistan leader in Canada in June this year. , Trudeau’s speech sparked immediate controversy as India rejected the allegations as “baseless” and “motivated” and expelled a senior Canadian diplomat in a tit-for-tat action.

Major powers of the world also joined this dispute. “All countries must respect sovereignty and the rule of law. British Foreign Secretary James Cleverley said, “We are in regular contact with our Canadian partners about the serious allegations raised in the Canadian Parliament.” Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong also gave a similar tone and said that the investigation is ongoing.

US Ambassador to India Eric Garcetti called on close allies to cooperate with the investigation and called for those responsible to be held accountable. Garcetti also said it was premature for the US to consider playing a role in calming tensions between the two countries.

Several separatist organizations supporting terror groups have bases in Canada and despite multiple deportation requests, Ottawa has taken no action against those involved in heinous crimes, including the murder of popular Punjabi singer Sidhu Moosewala, officials said here on Tuesday.

He said that pro-Khalistan organizations like World Sikh Organization (WSO), Khalistan Tiger Force (KTF), Sikhs for Justice (SFJ), and Babbar Khalsa International (BKI) are allegedly working independently at the behest of Pakistan from Canadian soil.

He said the allegations leveled against India by Canadian officials and politicians regarding the killing of Canadian citizen Hardeep Singh Nijjar by Khalistani terrorists are based on false and baseless assumptions.

Officials said the issue of deportation of wanted terrorists and gangsters have been raised by Indian officials in several diplomatic and security talks, but Canadian officials remained reluctant and unflinching in their support of these terrorist elements.

Several documents have been handed over to the Canadian side but India’s deportation requests have not been heeded, he said, adding that at least nine separatist organizations supporting terrorist groups have found their bases in Canada.

Eight people involved in terrorist activities and several gangsters who conspired with Pakistan’s ISI have got safe haven in Canada, officials said.

He said deportation requests for these people – including Gurwant Singh, who was involved in terrorist activities in the early 1990s – have been pending with Canadian authorities for years. Interpol Red Corner Notice is also pending against him.

Indian authorities had requested the deportation of Gurpreet Singh, who is also involved in terror cases and provided his Canadian address, but no action was taken, officials said.

He said requests were made to deport dreaded gangsters including Arshdeep Singh alias Arsh Dalla, wanted in 16 criminal cases, and Satinderjit Singh Brar alias Goldie Brar, who claimed responsibility for the murder of famous Punjabi singer Sidhu Moosewala but produced evidence against them. Went. No action was taken by the Government of Canada.

He said that separatist organizations are openly issuing murder threats, promoting separatist agenda and carrying out targeted killings in India.

He said the high profile murder of popular singer Sidhu Moosewala by a Canada-based gangster linked to pro-Khalistan elements “is a classic example of this”.

He said other wanted terrorists based in Canada include Gurwant Singh Bath of Khalistan’s Dashmesh Regiment, Bhagat Singh Brar (who is the son of Pakistan-based terrorist Lakhbir Singh Rode), Moninder Singh Bual, Satinder Pal Singh Gill.

Nijjar, who carries a cash reward of Rs 10 lakh, was born on November 10, 1977 in Punjab and was associated with the now-banned Khalistan Tiger Force (KTF). He was arrested in the mid-1990s. He managed to get bail and fled India on February 19, 1997, assuming the fake identity of Ravi Sharma and obtaining a travel document in that name.

In 2013–14, Nijjar visited Pakistan where he met Jagtar Singh Tara of the Khalistan Tiger Force (KTF), who was wanted in the murder of former Punjab Chief Minister Beant Singh.

During that period he was recruited by the ISI, helping him organize a covert training camp for Sikh extremist groups associated with the Khalistan movement in the Missigen Hills of British Columbia.

Nijjar, designated as a terrorist by the Union Home Ministry, was also accused of working in collaboration with Jagtar Singh Tara-led Babbar Khalsa International (BKI). He has been associated with Dal Khalsa leader Gajender Singh, who was the main accused in the hijacking of an Indian Airlines flight in 1981.

His name was included in the most wanted list submitted by then-Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh to Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in 2018.

Officials said Nijjar, along with criminals like Arsh Dalla, was raising huge amounts of money for anti-India activities through various means including drug money and finance from gurudwaras.

He said Canada’s current diplomatic standoff with India appears to be motivated by failures on the domestic political front and the declining popularity of the current government and that the expulsion of an Indian diplomat is aimed at garnering support from the Sikh population, particularly those supporting Do those who support it. Khalistani sentiments. to do. ,

Officials said Canadian authorities had failed to uncover any direct connection of Indian authorities with Nijjar’s murder and pointed to the murder of another Canadian citizen, Ripudaman Malik, who was accused by Nijjar and others of publishing Sri Guru Granth. There was an allegation of the murder of Sikhs. Had to face the wrath of For Justice. Sahib by Satnam Religious Propagation Society (SRPS). A few days later, he was assassinated by unknown gunmen.

Nijjar was the president of the Guru Nanak Sikh Gurdwara in Surrey. Nijjar was associated with the separatist outfit, Sikhs for Justice (SFJ), which is banned in India. He played a key role in holding the Khalistan referendum in Brampton City.

Nijjar was earlier declared a ‘wanted terrorist’ by the Government of India for his involvement in various acts of violence and subversive activities. Nijjar’s name also figures in a list issued by the Government of India, which names 40 other designated terrorists.

The National Investigation Agency had earlier filed a chargesheet against Nijjar for allegedly planning the terror attack. India had asked the Canadian authorities to take action against Nijjar for his alleged involvement in terrorist activities in Punjab.

In 2022, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) declared a reward of Rs 10 lakh on Nijjar after accusing him of conspiring to murder a Hindu priest in Jalandhar, Punjab.

The conspiracy to kill the priest was hatched by the Khalistan Tiger Force (KTF).

In view of the ongoing violent protests against the arrest of Imran Khan, the US Embassy in Islamabad on Wednesday announced the cancellation of all consular appointments.

The US Embassy said it is canceling all consular appointments due to possible traffic disruptions and restrictions amid nationwide protests across Pakistan.

“US. The Embassy is monitoring earlier reports of clashes between protesters and police in Islamabad as well as sporadic demonstrations taking place or being planned elsewhere across Pakistan. Due to possible traffic disruptions and restrictions, the US Embassy Islamabad has canceled all consular appointments for tomorrow, May 10, 2023,” said a statement from the US Embassy in Pakistan.

Washington called on people to be vigilant and avoid places of large crowds. It also cautioned people to be aware of their surroundings and check local media for updates.

Protests broke out across Pakistan on Tuesday after former Prime Minister Imran Khan was arrested during a court appearance in one of dozens of pending cases since he was ousted last year.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said that the United States “wants to make sure that whatever happens in Pakistan is in accordance with the rule of law, the constitution.”

Meanwhile, Canada has issued a travel advisory asking its citizens to exercise a high degree of caution due to the unpredictable security situation in Pakistan.

“There is a threat of terrorism, civil unrest, sectarian violence and kidnapping,” said a statement from the Canadian government.

Canada also urged people to avoid all areas within 50 km of the border with Afghanistan and within 10 km of the border with China, India and Iran.

“Avoid non-essential travel to the city of Karachi due to the threat of violence and terrorism,” the statement said.

Protesters, mostly supporters of Imran Khan, took their anger out on the army, storming the corps commander’s residence in Lahore and laying siege to a gate of the army’s general headquarters in the garrison city of Rawalpindi.

Police fired tear gas and water cannon to disperse Khan supporters in Karachi and Lahore, while protesters blocked roads in the capital Islamabad, Peshawar and other cities.

Canada has banned the sale of residential properties to foreigners as an investment. The ban came into force on Sunday and the decision was taken following a rise in property prices.

House prices in the country have risen since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, while some politicians believe that buyers were responsible for shutting down the supply of homes as an investment.

According to a report, the new ban has an exception for immigrants and permanent residents of Canada who are not citizens.

The desirability of Canadian homes is attracting profiteers, wealthy corporations and foreign investors, the campaign site for Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s party said last year.

“This is leading to a real problem of underutilized and vacant housing, rampant speculation and skyrocketing prices. Homes are for the people, not investors,” the campaign site read.

However, the steep rise in home prices in 2020 and 2021 was reversed in 2022, even before the law took effect.

According to the Canadian Real Estate Association (CREA), the median home price in Canada is set to exceed C$800,000 in February 2022. Then there was a fall of about 13 per cent in the prices.

The Bank of Canada has been raising interest rates, resulting in higher mortgage rates in the country.

The CREA price index is still up 38 percent from the end of 2019 before the pandemic. However, the group said that inventories of homes for sale have returned to pre-pandemic levels.

Real estate associations expressed concern about the law, even with specified exemptions.

The association also said the ban could signal retaliation by the United States and Mexico for prohibiting purchases by Canadians in those countries, particularly retirees looking for winter homes away from the Canadian winter.
