The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) successfully launched two ‘Pralay’ missiles simultaneously from a single launcher off the coast of Odisha on Wednesday morning, with a short interval between the launches.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh congratulated the DRDO, Indian Air Force, Indian Army, DPSUs, and industry for the successful launch of the missiles. He said that the successful simultaneous launch of the Pralay missiles has proven the reliability of the missile system.

According to a statement from the Ministry of Defence (MoD), the flight test was conducted at around 10:30 AM as part of user evaluation trials. Tracking sensors deployed by the Integrated Test Range at Chandipur confirmed that both missiles followed the intended trajectory and met all flight objectives. Terminal events were confirmed by telemetry systems on board ships deployed near the impact points.

‘Pralay’ is an indigenously developed solid-propellant quasi-ballistic missile that uses state-of-the-art guidance and navigation to ensure high accuracy. The missile is capable of carrying a variety of warheads against different targets.

The missile has been developed by Research Centre Imarat, Hyderabad, in collaboration with other DRDO laboratories (Defence Research and Development Laboratory, Advanced Systems Laboratory, Armament Research and Development Establishment, High Energy Materials Research Laboratory, Defence Metallurgical Research Laboratory, Terminal Ballistics Research Laboratory, Research and Development Establishment {Engineers}, and Integrated Test Range), development-cum-production partners (Bharat Dynamics Limited and Bharat Electronics Limited), and other Indian industries.

Why is this bad news for Pakistan and China?

While the term “bad news” is often used by the media to highlight strategic implications, what it actually means is:

Increased deterrence against ground threats along the borders. A longer conventional strike range that can reach critical infrastructure from a standoff distance. Reduced vulnerability to the missile defense systems of rival forces, making defense planning more challenging.

Robust indigenous missile development indicates technological maturity and reduced dependence on foreign technology.

DRDO, Indian Air Force, Indian Army, DPSUs, and industry for the successful launch of the missiles

According to the MoD, the system was integrated by two development-cum-production partners for the tests. The tests were witnessed by senior scientists from DRDO, user representatives from the Indian Air Force and Indian Army, as well as industry representatives, including the development-cum-production partners and the MoD, according to the statement.

The Secretary of the Department of Defence Research and Development and Chairman of DRDO, Samir V. Kamat, also congratulated the DRDO teams involved in the successful flight test and said that this achievement indicates early readiness for the induction of the system with the users.

The DipCovan kit can detect both a spike of SARS COV-2 virus as well as nucleocapsid (S&N) proteins with 97 percent high sensitivity and 99 percent specificity. The kit has been developed in collaboration with Vanguard Diagnostics Pvt Ltd of New Delhi.

The Dipcovan kit has been developed by indigenous scientists and subsequently extensively validated on more than 1,000 patient samples in designated hospitals in Delhi. The verification work on three batches of the product has been done during the last one year. The kit was approved by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) in April 2021.

The regulatory approval to manufacture this product for sale and distribution was granted in May 2021 by the Controller General of Drugs of India (DCGI), Central Pharmaceutical Standards Control Organization (CDSCO), Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

Dipcovan aims to qualitatively detect IgG antibodies in human serum or plasma that target the antigen related to SARS COV-2. This provides a significantly faster turn-around-time as it requires only 75 minutes to perform the test without any cross reactivity with other diseases. The shelf life of the kit is 18 months.

Industry partner Vanguard Diagnostics Pvt Ltd will commercially launch the kit in the first week of June 2021. The readily available stock at the time of launch will be of 100 kts (about 10,000 tests) and after launch it will have a production capacity of 500 kts / month. It is expected that it will be available at Rs 75 per check. This kit will be very useful to understand Covid-19 epidemiology and to evaluate the exposure of first SARS COV-2 in person.

Defense Minister Rajnath Singh has appreciated the efforts of DRDO and industry in developing the kit at the time of need.

Dr. G. Satish Reddy, Secretary, Department of Defense Research and Development and Chairman of DRDO, praised the team involved in developing the kit and said that the move will help people during the epidemic.

New Delhi: A device developed by the Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) for the use of soldiers will now work for Covid-19 patients who require medical assistance.

The DRDO said on Monday that being the forefront of supporting the Indian soldier in the toughest terrain and adverse conditions, the Defense Research and Development Organization has now developed another system, which is not only for high-altitude Indian soldiers. But in this extreme crisis of Covid-19 pandemic, it will prove to be a boon for the country.

The Defense Bio-Engineering and Electro Medical Laboratory (DEBEL), Bengaluru of DRDO has developed a SpO2 (Blood Oxygen Saturation) supplemental oxygen delivery system for soldiers at extremely high altitudes. This automated system distributes supplemental oxygen based on SpO2 levels and prevents the individual from going into a state of hypoxia, which is fatal in most cases.

DRDO explained that hypoxia is a condition in which the amount of oxygen reaching the tissues is insufficient to meet all the body’s energy needs. This is precisely the situation that is repeated in the Covid patient due to virus infection and leads to the current crisis.

The system’s electronic hardware is designed to operate at extreme altitudes characterized by low barometer pressure, low temperature, and humidity. Software security checks included in the system are important in ensuring the system’s functional reliability in field conditions.

The system reads the subject’s SpO2 levels from the wrist-worn pulse oximeter module via a wireless interface and controls a proportional solenoid valve to regulate the oxygen supply to the subject.

Oxygen is delivered through nasal holes from a lightweight portable oxygen cylinder. The system is available in various sizes with a supply of 150 liters of oxygen with a weight of one liter and one kilogram with a supply of 10 liters and 1500 liters of oxygen with a supply of 1500 liters of oxygen. Can last up to 750 minutes with flow.

Since the system is indigenously developed to operate in field conditions, it is unique with the dual qualities of robustness and cheapness and is already in bulk production with the industry.

The DRDO stated that the system is a boon in the current pandemic, as it can be used for oxygen flow therapy for moderate covid patients in the home with controlled flow at 2/5/7/10 LPM flow.

Auto-use in home use has major advantages, as the oximeter will give an alarm for the lower SpO2 value. This will automatically increase or decrease O2 flow depending on the SpO2 setting which can be automatically adjusted at a flow rate from 2,5,7,10.

With its availability and simplicity for a common person to use the facility, the system will greatly reduce the workload and exposure time of doctors and paramedics to monitor a patient’s SpO2 levels.

Automatic calibrated variable flow control via a calibrated flow control valve (PFCV) for low O2 levels (user pre-set, <90%, <80%) will facilitate reduced oxygen supply. A moderate Covid patient requires a prolonged medium O2 supply of 10Litre / 150bar – 10kg – 1500 liters which can last up to 750 minutes.

(With agency inputs)

This smart weapon was successfully tested with the Indian Hawk-MK 132 aircraft manufactured at HAL. SAWW’s test was the ninth in a series of successful tests conducted by DRDO so far. It was a textbook test that achieved all its goals. The telemetry and tracking system installed at the Interim Testing Base (ITR) at Balasore captured all the views of the mission on camera.

The smart anti-airfield weapon is designed and developed by DRDO’s Hyderabad Research Center building (RCI) indigenously. It is a 125 kg weight class smart weapon that can target enemy’s airfield assets such as radars, bunkers, taxi tracks, and runways from a distance of 100 km. Its high-accuracy guided bombs also weigh less than other weapons systems of this category. The weapon has been successfully tested by Jaguar aircraft before.

Dr. G., Chairman of DRDO and Secretary of DDR&D Satish Reddy congratulated the team involved in this successful test on its success.

The function was held at the headquarters of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), New Delhi. Dr. AK Singh, DS and DG (LS) of DRDO handed over the model of ‘Rakshita’ to AP Maheshwari, Director General of Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), after which a team of 21 bikes was flagged off on the occasion.

This bike ambulance will immediately help in the problems faced by the Indian security forces and emergency healthcare providers. It will provide lifesaving support while evacuating the injured from less intense conflict areas. It will be suitable for narrow roads and remote areas, where access via ambulance is difficult and more time-consuming. This bike ambulance can provide a medical emergency requirement for patients faster than a four-wheel ambulance due to its functionality and integrated emergency medical support system.

The bike ambulance ‘Rakshita’ has a customized reclining casualty evacuation seat (CES), which can be used as per requirement. The ‘Rakshita’ also includes a head immobilizer, safety harness jacket, safety straps for hand and foot protection, wireless monitoring capability for the driver, and physiological parameter measuring equipment along with an auto warning system. Recent real-time monitoring of the injured partner can be performed on the LCD on the dashboard. The bike ambulance is also equipped with air splints, medical and oxygen kits to provide health care on the spot.

This bike ambulance is not only useful for paramilitary and military forces but can also be used for civilians.

Dr. G. Satish Reddy, Chairman DRDO, and Secretary DD R&D appreciated the efforts of scientists for this indigenous and cost-effective solution in response to the challenges facing our security forces.

Its upper receiver is made from aircraft-grade aluminum and the lower receiver is made of carbon fiber. The 3D printing process has been used in designing and prototyping its various parts including trigger components. It has great potential in the armed forces as a personal weapon in heavy weapon detachment, commanders, tanks and aircraft drivers, driver-ridden dispatch riders, radioactive operators, close combat, anti-extremism, and counter-terrorism operations. It can be used in central and state police organizations as well as VIP security duties and policing. The production cost of each machine pistol is within 50 thousand rupees and there is also the possibility of its export.

The pistol is named ASMI which means pride, self-respect, and hard work.

Keeping in mind the Prime Minister’s vision of self-reliant India, the move will pave the way for self-reliance and will be increasingly included in the army and paramilitary forces.
