Mulayam was born on 22 November 1939 in Saifai village of Etawah district of Uttar Pradesh to Murti Devi and Sugar Singh Yadav. Yadav had three degrees in Political Science – B.A. B.T. from Karmakshetra Post Graduate College, Etawah. A.K. of Shikohabad from college, and B.R. College, Agra University

Former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister and Samajwadi Party (SP) founder Mulayam Singh Yadav passed away on 10 October. Yadav was undergoing treatment for several health problems. Yadav, also known as ‘Netaji’ among his followers and party workers, is survived by Akhilesh Yadav, who is currently the SP chief and also a former chief minister of UP.

In his decades-long political career, Samajwadi Party patriarch Mulayam Singh Yadav served as the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh thrice – between 1989-91, again from 1993-95 and again in 2003-2007. But there were instances when he was close to becoming the Prime Minister of India – but narrowly escaped.

It is believed that the SP leader was ahead in the race for the PM’s chair in 1996, but could not become the Prime Minister due to the objections of Rashtriya Janata Dal supremo Lalu Prasad Yadav and Sharad Yadav.

Congress had suffered a crushing defeat in the 1996 Lok Sabha elections. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) had 161 seats in its account. Atal Bihari Vajpayee accepted the invitation to form the government. Vajpayee was sworn in as prime minister, but his government fell in 13 days.

Now the question arose as to who would form the new government. The Congress had 141 seats in its bag, but it was in no mood to form a mish-mash coalition government.

All eyes were fixed on VP Singh. He formed a coalition government in 1989. However, this time he refused to become the Prime Minister and put forward the name of Jyoti Basu, the then Chief Minister of West Bengal. But the CPM Politburo rejected VP Singh’s proposal.

After this the names of Mulayam Singh and Lalu Prasad Yadav came up. Lalu was out of the race for PM after his name cropped up in the fodder scam. The task of forging the alliance was entrusted to Harkishan Singh Surjit, a veteran of the Left. In this he was successful.

Surjit advocated Mulayam’s name for the Prime Minister but Lalu Prasad Yadav and Sharad Yadav strongly opposed it. As a result, Netaji missed out on becoming the Prime Minister.

Elections were held again in 1999. Mulayam Singh won a double victory from Sambhal and Kannauj seats. His name came up again for the post of PM. But in the 1996 iteration, other Yadav leaders refused to support Mulayam.

In this way Mulayam Singh came close to occupying the prime minister’s chair twice, but lost due to coalition politics.

The 82-year-old leader has been under the supervision of oncologist Dr Nitin Sood and internal medicine specialist Dr Sushila Kataria. Yadav is not keeping well for the last three years. He is admitted to the hospital for examination once or twice a month. But, his condition has been deteriorating steadily since August.

It is said that Yadav has a prostate related problem and because of this he is constantly under the supervision of experts. During his stay in the capital of UP, he is under the supervision of doctors at Medanta Lucknow.

Earlier, he was admitted to the hospital on June 15, and was discharged after a routine check-up. However, since June, his health seems to be deteriorating and he has complained of one thing or the other. His health seems to have deteriorated after the death of his wife Sadhna Gupta, and has been in Delhi for most of this year.

Gupta died in June at Medanta Hospital. According to reports, she was suffering from a lung ailment and had complained of shortness of breath before she passed away.

She was the second wife of Mulayam Singh Yadav who was 20 years younger than him. His son’s name is Prateek Yadav while Bharatiya Janata Party leader Aparna Yadav is his daughter-in-law.

Meanwhile, Samajwadi Party workers offered special prayers for the long life of the party founder at several temples in Uttar Pradesh. A SP official said that in Lucknow, party workers offered prayers at Hanuman temple located on Vikramaditya Marg.

A party leader said that in Varanasi, he offered prayers at various temples, including the Hanuman temple in Gilat Bazar and the Bada Ganesh temple in Lohatia. SP spokesperson Manoj Rai said everyone in the party needed the blessings of ‘Netaji’ (as Mulayam is affectionately addressed) and offered special prayers at various temples, including performing ‘havan’ at Assi Ghat in Varanasi. .

SP leader Ajay Yadav in Varanasi said that he is ready to donate his kidney if needed. In Saharanpur too, prayers were made for Yadav’s speedy recovery. Former SP city president Faisal Salmani prayed for the speedy recovery of the SP leader.

Prayers were also offered for Yadav in Deoband. Samajwadi Party in Lucknow issued an appeal to party workers not to visit Medanta Hospital, Gurugram as he was admitted to a critical care unit there and his condition is stable. “It is not possible to meet Netaji and enter the hospital. It is a humble request not to reach there. You will be updated about Netaji’s health from time to time,” the party said on its Twitter handle.

NEW DELHI: All opposition Leaders of 11 parties including Congress president Sonia Gandhi, DMK chief M K Stalin, NCP patriarch Sharad Pawar, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav and Left Front’s Sitaram Yechury and D Raja on Sunday said they might lend their “whole-hearted” support to the Immaculate Conception Bharat bandh call by farmers’ unions protesting against the three agri-marketing laws and demanding their repeal.

A joint statement signed by the heads of the 11 parties said the new laws were passed in Parliament during a “brazen anti-democratic manner”, preventing a structured discussion and voting. They also claimed the laws “threaten India’s food security, destroy Indian agriculture and our farmers, lay the idea for the abolishment of the Minimum Support Price (MSP) and mortgage Indian agriculture and our markets to the caprices of multi-national agri-business corporates and domestic corporates”.

Shiv Sena, Trinamool, TRS, Akali Dal, AAP and BJP allies — Assam’s AGP and Rashtriya Loktantrik Party in Rajasthan — too came call at support of the stir and Bharat bandh call, though they weren’t signatories to the joint statement.

“The central government must adhere to democratic processes and norms and meet the legitimate demands of our ‘kisans-annadatas’,” the letter signed by leaders of parties, including National Conference’s Farooq Abdullah and RJD’s Tejashwi Yadav, said.

Earlier within the day, Congress said on Immaculate Conception, the party would hold day-long protests altogether district and state headquarters in solidarity with the farmers. Former party chief Rahul Gandhi has backed the farmer community, demanding that the govt concede to their demands.

“The entire world is witnessing the plight of our farmers. The whole world is seeing the horrible sight of farmers sitting outside the capital within the middle of the night in winter expecting the govt to concentrate to them,” Congress spokesperson Pawan Khera said, slamming the govt for the hurry with which the farm laws were enacted.

Khera claimed the Centre didn’t take farmers into confidence and was now claiming to figure in their interest. “What we are seeing today is that the results of a conspiracy between the govt and its corporate friends, wherein the victim are going to be the farmer, and therefore the farmer knows this,” he added.
