Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who has been embroiled in controversies for the past several months, is now facing another crisis. Due to issues like India dispute, inflation, loss of jobs etc., it seemed that PM Trudeau would be out of power in the 2025 elections, but an announcement by his ally party seems to indicate that the Trudeau-led Liberal Party will fall before completing its term. This is because Trudeau’s close ally New Democratic Party (NDP) leader Jagmeet Singh has decided to pull the ground from under his feet.
Singh announced that he would bring a no-confidence motion in the House of Commons after the winter break on January 27. He says that the Liberals should not get another chance. He said, “It does not matter who is leading the Liberal Party, this government’s time is over.”
It will be difficult for Trudeau to survive this time
NDP leader Jagmeet Singh wrote on X, “Justin Trudeau failed in the biggest job of a prime minister: working for the people, not for the powerful. NDP will vote to topple this government and give Canadians a chance to vote for a government that will work for them.
There is little chance of Trudeau surviving the no-confidence motion this time, because the other opposition party Bloc Quebecois, which was preventing early elections, has also announced its support for the motion. The main opposition Conservative Party has been demanding the removal of the government and early elections for the last three months. Earlier, opposition leader Pierre Poilievre had even asked Jagmeet Singh to bring a no-confidence motion.
Big change in Trudeau cabinet
Amidst all this, Justin Trudeau has made a major reshuffle in his cabinet, in which one-third of the members of his senior team have been changed. While after a series of setbacks it seemed that his term as Prime Minister would end and Canada is going to have elections soon, this move on Friday has been taken after the shocking resignation of his deputy, demands for his resignation from within his own party and public mockery from Donald Trump.
