On October 8, the Assam government suspended APS officer Sandipan Garg, who was arrested in connection with Zubeen Garg’s death. Sandipan is Zubeen’s cousin and a DSP.
Sandipan had traveled to Singapore with the singer. He was reportedly on the boat when the Ya Ali singer died while swimming on September 19.
Sandipan is charged under sections of the Indian Penal Code, including murder, culpable homicide not amounting to murder, criminal conspiracy, and causing death by negligence.
Zubeen Garg’s wife, Garima, spoke to reporters in Assam after Sandipan’s arrest. She described how the legendary singer felt about his cousin.
Garima told reporters, “Before joining the police service, Sandipan was interested in modeling and acting. He used to come to us. He did modeling projects with us 3-4 times. So, he was good at it.”
“Zubin always encouraged new talent. Since he was his brother (cousin), Zubin always loved him. When he joined the APS, Zubin was always proud of him.”
“Zubin used to tell everyone that he was the tallest in our family, and that he was a very handsome boy. He was in the police service. That’s why he was proud of him,” she added.
Garima Garg then explained why Zubin took Sandipan with him to Singapore.
“Sandipan wanted to go with Zubin. He had never been abroad. So, this time, when he said he wanted to go with Zubin, Zubin was very happy to take him along,” she said.
Garima also spoke about Sandipan’s arrest
“They may have found some clues in his statement. Therefore, the investigation process is ongoing. This is their own business. I cannot comment on this. The investigation, the law, must take its course,” she said.
“All the family members, the rest of Assam, and all of Zubeen’s loved ones are waiting for the outcome. However, the process will continue. We believe so. We have faith in our Indian law and judiciary. I think they will take the right path and very soon they will be able to give us some results on this matter,” she added.
“This time, he wanted to leave. No wonder this man looks suspicious!!! And, please, Garima, don’t trust the government too much,” one of them posted.
“But why do you trust the government and the system so much? Don’t you think they might be corrupt? Don’t you think it’s wrong to trust them blindly? Don’t you think?” another user asked.
One user wrote, “Another police officer has been accused of serious charges. How many more are involved in this case that we don’t know about? The Assam government should take swift action. In the Zubeen Garg case, no matter what position the accused holds, justice must be served.”
“I’m from Assam. And I can say that Zubeen Da’s death wasn’t just due to drowning… There are many reasons for this… His manager, organizers, his cousin have already been arrested… Some big political names may also come forward… Hopefully, justice will be served,” another user wrote.
