Navratri has a great religious and spiritual significance in Hinduism. Chaitra Navratri and Sharadiya Navratri have their own significance. Navratri means worshipping Maa Durga for nine days and observing fasts dedicated to Maa Durga. These days are considered the holiest to perform various puja rituals of Goddess Durga and receive blessings. Lord Rama’s birthday or Ram Navami marks the end of Chaitra Navratri on the ninth day of the festival. Chaitra Navratri marks the new beginning of the spring season. Devotees engage in worship, fasting, introspection and participate in night vigils. Each day of Navratri represents each form of Maa Durga and devotees honor them to receive blessings and find happiness in their lives.
Chaitra Navratri is a time when devotees fast for nine consecutive days, offer special food and pray to Goddess Durga. It honors a different deity each day. There are customs and puja rituals associated with each day of Chaitra Navratri. Ghatasthapana, the ceremonial installation of the Kalash symbolizing the presence of the Goddess, is performed on the first day of Navratri. On Ashtami, the eighth day of Navratri, devotees offer special worship to little girls. Little girls symbolize the Goddess taking the form of a little girl. In Chaitra Navratri, the ninth and last day is celebrated as Ram Navami, the birth date of Lord Rama, an incarnation of Lord Vishnu. Devotees take out processions, sing bhajans, observe fasts and offer special prayers to seek the blessings of Lord Rama on this day.
