On Wednesday, August 20, 2025, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta was attacked during a regular public grievance session (Jan Sunwai) held at her official residence in Civil Lines. A man who claimed to be a petitioner approached her, handed her some papers, then slapped her and pulled her hair, following which he was subdued by security personnel.
The accused man first handed Rekha Gupta a paper as a complaint and then allegedly attacked her. The Chief Minister reportedly suffered a ‘mild blow’ on her head.
Health and safety response
Despite the attack, Rekha Gupta was medically stable, although she suffered minor injuries to her head, shoulder and hand. Doctors are keeping a close watch on her condition and she is reported to have decided to continue with her scheduled programmes. Security has been beefed up at her residence.
Identity and possible motive
The alleged attacker has been identified as Rajeshbhai Khimjibhai Sakaria, 41, originally from Rajkot, Gujarat. His motive is under investigation—some reports indicate a possible personal grievance (such as a court petition for a relative in jail), while others indicate a connection to animal-welfare issues. His mother described him as an “animal lover”.
Political reactions
The incident received widespread condemnation in political circles:
BJP leaders condemned the attack and raised concerns over a political conspiracy, and demanded a thorough investigation.
AAP leader Atishi (Leader of the Opposition) condemned the attack and stressed that there is no place for violence in a democracy.
Congress leaders used the opportunity to question the safety of women in Delhi and said that if the Chief Minister cannot feel safe, how can ordinary citizens feel safe?
