Delhi to get double-decker buses after 35 years, trial to begin soon

Delhi Double-Decker Bus Service: Delhi’s wait for double-decker buses is finally going to end soon as the first such bus has arrived in the national capital after a gap of 35 years.

Earlier, double-decker buses used to run on Delhi’s roads till 1989. At that time they were called ‘Suvidha Bus’. These buses used to run on diesel, while the new buses will be fully electric and air-conditioned.

Under the plan, the first electric double-decker bus has reached the national capital and is parked at the Okhla depot.

The Delhi Transport Corporation will soon conduct trial runs on select routes. After the trial is successful, the fleet will be expanded.

The DTC will carefully select the routes for the trial run. The government is working on the plan, Delhi Transport Minister said on Friday. The route will be selected keeping in mind that there are no obstacles like trees, electric wires and flyovers on the way.

A total of 1,500 electric buses, including 100 double-decker buses, will be provided to Delhi through Convergence Energy Services Limited (CESL).

Electric double-decker buses have a higher passenger capacity. Compared to normal buses, this bus has a seating arrangement for 63 passengers.

There are stairs to go from the normal floor to the second floor. The height of these buses is 4.75 meters and the length is 9.8 meters. There is a plan to run these buses in orange color. Cluster service buses in Delhi have been running in orange color since the time of the previous government.
