G20 Summit: Tight security measures with restrictions in designated areas have been put in place for the G20 summit in Delhi from September 9 to 10. Know what remained closed and what opened in Delhi during the G20 summit.

Are you planning to be in central Delhi during the G20 summit this weekend, it’s best to prepare well in advance. The Delhi Traffic Police has put in place tight security measures for the high-profile event where world leaders like US President Joe Biden, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and others will gather. In the wake of the G20 summit, citizens of New Delhi are curious about some common questions such as what will be open and closed during the event. So, here’s everything you need to know.

No market will be closed

Establishments in the New Delhi area, including the Bharat Mandapam at Pragati Maidan, will remain closed during the summit on September 8, 9 and 10. Dhaula Kuan, Khan Market, Janpath and Bhikaji Cama Place have been designated as “sensitive zones”, but no markets will be closed.

Essential services will remain open

Cloud kitchen and delivery services will not be allowed in the New Delhi area during the summit. However, essential services like grocery stores, ATMs and medical stores will remain open in the regulated area.

Which metro stations will remain closed

Metro services will remain operational to travel anywhere in the capital city. If you intend to travel to any area of Central Delhi, it is advisable to plan ahead and opt for the Metro. During this time Moti Bagh, Bhikaji Cama Place, Munirka, RK Puram, IIT and Sadar Bazar Cantonment metro stations will remain closed. Gate number 1, 2 and 3 will remain closed at Khan Market, while gate number 4 will remain open for both entry and exit. For exact metro navigation information, visit DMRC website.

Temporary traffic rules

Some heads of state will stay in elite hotels like Maurya Sheraton, Lodhi Hotel and Hyatt, which are outside the NDMC area and will function as normal. Temporary traffic rules may be in place only during the movement of dignitaries.

Ban on morning walks

Vehicular movement including cars and bicycles will not be allowed in the controlled area, hence it is advised not to go for morning walks during the summit.

No restrictions on the outer ring road

The entire New Delhi district will be designated as “Controlled Zone-I”, while the area bounded by Ring Road (Mahatma Gandhi Marg) will be classified as “Regulated Zone” from 5 am Friday to midnight Sunday. There are no restrictions on the Outer Ring Road, except National Highway 48, which will be diverted to alternative routes, but services will not be stopped.
