Ganesh Chaturthi 2022: Significance and Rituals
On the occasion of Ganesh Chaturthi, devotees worship Lord Ganesha for a prosperous and good future. It is believed that Ganesh Chaturthi marks the rebirth of Ganesha and signifies ‘new beginnings’.
It is believed that Lord Ganesha was born during Madhyahna, in the middle of the day, making midday the most auspicious time for Ganesh Puja, also known as Shodashopachara Ganapati Puja.
On this day, the idols of Lord Ganesha are brought home for Ganesh sthapana and people offer puja and bhog every day for 10 days. On Anant Chaturdashi, devotees immerse the idols of Lord Ganesha in water bodies.
Lord Ganesha is worshiped with all sixteen rituals along with chanting of mythological mantras during Ganesh Chaturthi Puja, also known as Vinayaka Chaturthi Puja.
Generally, only sixteen Upacharas are followed and this is known as Shodashopachara Puja. Some Hindus limit it to five stages of worship and this is known as Panchopachar.

There are two different versions about the birth of Ganesha. One is that Goddess Parvati created Ganesha out of the filth of his body while bathing and installed him to guard his door while completing the bath. Shiva who had gone out returned at that time, but Ganesha did not know about him, so prevented him from entering. After a fight between the two, an angry Shiva beheaded Ganesha.
Parvati became furious and Shiva promised that Ganesha would live again. The gods who went in search of a dead man’s head facing north could only manage the head of an elephant. Shiva rested the elephant’s head on the child and brought him back to life.
Another legend has it that Ganesha was created by Shiva and Parvati at the request of the gods, a Vighnakarta (obstacle-builder) in the path of the demons (demonic beings) and a Vighnaharta (obstacle-destroyer) to help the Devas.
