Here’s why Triyuginarayan temple is famous for marriage of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati

It is a Hindu temple located in Triyuginarayan village of Rudraprayag district of Uttarakhand. The ancient temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu. Triyuginarayan Temple is also known as Trijugi Narayan Temple among the local people.

Triyugi Narayan Temple offers a peaceful and picturesque evening. The beauty of Triyuginarayan Temple is quite cool to the eyes. It is mentioned in the Vedas that this Trijuginarayan temple was established in Treta Yuga, while Kedarnath and Badrinath were established in Dwarpara Yuga.

Triyuginarayan is made up of three words. Tri means three, Yugi means long period (epoch) and Narayana is the name of Lord Vishnu. It is believed that the fire ignited inside the temple is burning for three Yugas (Three Yugas) hence the name of this place is Triyugi and the temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu hence the full name Tri Yugi Narayan.

Tri Yugi Narayan Temple is mainly famous for the marriage of Lord Shiva and Mata Parvati. Considering the sacred fire burning for three ages as witnesses, Lord Shiva and Mother Parvati tied the knot. Pilgrims visiting Kedarnath can also visit Triyuginarayan Temple as it is en route.

In this divine marriage, Lord Vishnu performed the duty of Parvati’s brother, while Lord Brahma became the priest.

It is said that the sacred fire that had been ignited for centuries started burning from the time of this divine marriage. Thus, the temple is also called Akhand Dhani Mandir.

Pilgrims take the ashes of the Havan Kund with them and believe that this will make their married life happy. The Brahmashila in front of the temple is believed to be the actual place of this divine marriage.

The capital of Himavat was Triyuginarayan. Here Lord Shiva married Mata Parvati in Tretayuga. Lord Vishnu as the brother of Goddess Parvati followed all the rituals in the marriage of Shiva Parvati. While Lord Brahma became the priest in the marriage of Shiva and Parvati.

At that time all the sages and saints had participated in this ceremony. The fixed place of marriage is called Brahma Shila, which is situated right in front of the temple.

Before this divine marriage all the deities also took bath here hence there are three kunds (pools) which are called as Rudra Kund, Vishnu Kund and Brahma Kund.

These kunds get their water supply from Saraswati Kund. Saraswati Kund was made from the navel of Lord Vishu. It is believed that by taking a bath in these pools one gets freedom from childlessness.

Triyuginarayan Temple houses a temple of Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi. Lord Vishnu is worshiped in his Vamana form in Triyuginarayan temple and also in the sanctum sanctorum there are idols of Shri Badrinath, Lord Ramachandra ji. The lamp remains intact in the temple; There is an idol of Goddess Parvati near this lamp.

Triyuginarayan Temple Havan Kundi

The Havan Kund in the temple is also continuously lit; Wood, ghee, barley and sesame are offered in its fire. People apply the ashes of the Havan Kund on the forehead which people accept as prasad. There are four kunds in the courtyard of the temple which are known as Brahmakund, Rudrakund, Saraswatkund and Vishnukund. It has a tradition of bathing and tarpan. It is also believed that the ashes emanating from the Havanakund make the married life of the devotees happy.

According to another ancient legend, King Bali had to perform 100 yagyas to attain Indrasan. The king performed 99 yagyas, then Lord Vishnu took the Vamana avatar and stopped King Bali, thereby obstructing King Bali’s sacrifice, hence Vishnu is worshiped as Vamana deity at this place.

By Air: The nearest airport is Jolly Grant (233 km) which is located in Dehradun.
By Train: Rishikesh (219 km) is the nearest railway station.
By Road: The temple is 12 km away from Sonprayag. Sonprayag is well connected by road. Triyuginarayan Temple can also be reached by trekking.
