Worship method

Get up early this morning, after taking a bath, wear clean clothes and light a lamp in the temple. Then after bathing the idol of the deities, wear clean clothes. If you can fast, then take a resolution and meditate on Lord Vishnu. Worship Goddess Lakshmi along with Lord Vishnu.

Stories

There are many legends about Varuthini Ekadashi. According to a legend, when Lord Shiva cut off the fifth head of Brahma ji when he was angry, he was cursed. To get rid of this curse, Lord Shiva fasted on Varuthini Ekadashi. By observing Varuthini Ekadashi fast, Lord Shiva was freed from curses and sins. According to religious beliefs, the result of fasting on this day is equivalent to many years of penance.

According to another legend, in ancient times a king named Mandhata ruled on the banks of river Narmada. Once, while he was doing penance in the forest, a bear came there and started chewing on the king’s feet. King Mandhata remained absorbed in penance even after suffering deep pain. When the bear started dragging the king inside the forest, the king prayed to Lord Vishnu for protection.

Hearing the king’s prayer, Lord Vishnu appeared there and saved the life of the king by killing the bear. By then the bear had eaten a leg of the king. When Lord Vishnu saw this, he told King Mandhata to go to Mathura and observe Varuthini Ekadashi fast. With the effect of this fast you will be fine. The king did the same and due to the effect of the fast, his feet came back again. The king attained heaven after his death by fasting on Varuthini Ekadashi.
