As we all know that International Women’s Day is of great importance in the modern era. However, did you know that this day is celebrated since the early 1900s.
Back in 1908, a total of 15,000 women began a march through New York City US to demand good pay, reduced working hours and the right to vote. For the first time ever, National Women’s Day was celebrated across the United States on February 28. This day was celebrated on the last Sunday of February till 1913.
Now in 1911, countries like Austria, Denmark, Germany and Switzerland were honored with International Women’s Day on 19 March.
Russian women celebrated their first International Women’s Day on 23 February, which is also the eve of World War I and the last Sunday in February.
Shortly thereafter, it was agreed to mark International Women’s Day annually on 8 March, according to the Gregorian calendar. Since then, this day is celebrated all over the world with great enthusiasm.
The United Nations celebrated the first International Women’s Day in 1975. In 1996, the United Nations announced its first annual theme as “Celebrating the Past, Planning for the Future”.

The theme of International Women’s Day 2022 is “Gender Equality Today for a Sustainable Tomorrow”.

“This year’s IWD observance is in recognition and celebration of the women and girls who are leading the charge on climate change adaptation and response, and honors their leadership and contributions to a sustainable future,” it added.
