Paush Purnima 2023: Paush Purnima holds a great religious significance among Hindus. The full moon is on the full moon day. Paush Purnima is also celebrated as Shakambhari Purnima and Goddess Shakambhari is worshiped on this day. People worship Lord Vishnu and keep a fast on this holy day. Paush Purnima is being celebrated on 6 January 2023.

Paush Purnima 2023: Significance

According to Hindu scriptures, Paush Purnima is considered one of the most prominent and important days in Hinduism. On this auspicious day people observe Satyanarayan Vrat and worship Lord Vishnu. It is the day when devotees visit various holy places to take bath in holy rivers like – Ganga, Yamuna and Shipra etc.

Paush Purnima is also dedicated to worshiping Lord Surya, devotees offer water to Lord Surya and it is believed that worshiping Lord Surya on the holy day of Paush Purnima leads to salvation. Worshiping both Sun and Moon on this day brings blessings and wishes are fulfilled.

Some people also organize Havan and Yagya and offer food and charity to Brahmins on this special day. By donating on this auspicious day, the biggest sins committed knowingly or unknowingly are washed away.

The full moon day is very blissful for couples and those who are in love should offer kheer to Lord Vishnu and worship on this auspicious day to marry their desired partner.

Paush Purnima 2023: Puja Vidhi

  1. People wake up early in the morning and take holy bath.
  2. A large number of devotees also visit Haridwar and Prayagraj to take a holy dip in the holy river Ganges.
  3. The special importance of bathing in Prayagraj and Haridwar has been explained on the day of Paush Purnima.
  4. After bath, offer Arghya to Lord Surya and chant Surya Mantra- ‘Om Ghrini Suryaya Namah’.
  5. They light a lamp of desi ghee and worship Lord Vishnu.
  6. Some devotees organize Havan and donate food and clothes to Brahmins.
