Earlier this month, the renowned actor had been in and out of Breach Candy Hospital in South Mumbai, but was discharged last week and is recovering at home.
Dharmendra, known as Bollywood’s “He-Man,” left behind a legacy of memorable performances in films such as Aayi Milan Ki Bela, Phool Aur Patthar, Aaye Din Bahar Ke, Sita Aur Geeta, Raja Jaani, Jugnu, Yaadon Ki Baaraat, Dost, Sholay, Pratigya, Charas, and Dharam Veer.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and many others called his death “the end of an era” for Indian cinema.
His longtime friend and co-star Jeetendra, who worked with Dharmendra in films such as Dharam Veer, The Burning Train, Samrat, Insaaf Ki Pukar, Nafrat Ki Aandhi, Pappi Devta, and Hum Sab Chor Hain, expressed grief. “I don’t have words to describe the emotions in my heart right now! I’ve lost a friend, he was more than a brother to me! Even though we met less frequently over the past few decades, our friendship has always stood the test of time! An everlasting connection that transcended the professional equation we shared as co-actors in the many films we did together! The moments we spent together will always live in my heart! My deepest condolences to his family and friends! RIP Dharam ji!”
Filmmaker Karan Johar, in a heartfelt tribute, called Dharmendra “a huge mega-star… the epitome of a hero… the best human being.”
