Sawan Shivratri 2022: Significance, worship method, auspicious time and mantra

Sawan Shivratri 2022: According to the Hindu Vedic calendar, the auspicious month of Shravan has started from July 14. This month is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is celebrated wholeheartedly by his devotees. While every day of the month of Sawan is said to be special, Shravan Shivratri has great significance.

Monthly Shivaratri is celebrated every month on Krishna Paksha Chaturdashi Tithi to celebrate the Linga Avatar of Lord Shiva. That’s why on Shivratri people worship Shivling and offer milk, curd and Gangajal in the form of Lord Shiva. In July, Krishna Paksha Chaturdashi Tithi of Shravan month is falling on 26th July. To celebrate this day, people visit temples and observe a fast to please the Lord and seek his blessings.

According to the Panchang, Chaturdashi Tithi will start on July 26 at 6:46 pm and will end on July 27 at 9:11 pm. The auspicious time to worship Shiva will be between 12:07 pm to 12:49 pm on July. 27.

While Shivratri is celebrated every month on Chaturdashi Tithi but Maha Shivratri is celebrated only once in a year. The day which is considered as the day of convergence of Shiva and Shakti is celebrated on Krishna Chaturdashi Tithi of Magha month according to South Indian calendar and Krishna Paksha Chaturdashi Tithi of Falgun month according to North Indian calendar. It is also believed that Lord Shiva took his Linga avatar on the midnight of Shivaratri. That’s why Shivling is worshiped on every Shivratri day.

On this day, devotees wake up early and start worship after taking bath in Brahma Muhurta. They begin the worship by offering Rudrabhishek to the Shivling with Gangajal, raw milk, curd, ghee, honey, vermilion, turmeric powder, rose water, datura flowers and bael leaves. Then, devotees offer flowers, fruits and sandalwood to the Lord. They chant Shiv Chalisa, Shiva Mantra and Bhajans and observe a one-day fast on an auspicious day.

It is believed to be auspicious to chant Shiva mantras during the puja. Some of the mantras you can recite are:

“Om Tryambakam Yajamahe Sugandhim Pushti-Vardhanam

Urvarukamiva Bandhanan Mrityormukshiya Mamritat”

“Om Tatpurushaya Vidmahe Mahadevaya Dhimahi
