Amarinder Singh likely takes over as Governor of Maharashtra replacing Bhagat Singh Koshyari

Former Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh is likely to replace Bhagat Singh Koshyari as the Governor of Maharashtra.

Koshyari, a former BJP veteran, had said in a statement that he had conveyed his desire to step down to Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the latter’s recent visit to Mumbai. However, there is no official word on the development yet.

Koshyari, who took charge as governor in September 2019, has found himself embroiled in controversies, often drawing the ire of the then MVA government, which has also sought his removal. He has also been criticized by opposition parties for allegedly desecrating statues of Maharashtra and distorting history.

Singh, on the other hand, served as the Chief Minister of Punjab until he was removed from the post in March 2022, a few months before the Punjab Assembly elections. He resigned from the Congress party on October 28, 2021.

After this Singh formed his political party Punjab Lok Congress in November of the same year and also contested elections on all 117 seats. However, the party failed to win any seats in the elections and later merged with the Bharatiya Janata Party in September 2022
