‘Delmicron’ behind the surge of Covid cases in UK, US, not just Omicron

The mega surge in COVID cases in Europe and the US is probably a ‘Delmicron’ wave – a combination of Delta and Omicron variants – said a member of the Covid Task Force in Maharashtra.

“There has been a small tsunami of cases in Delmicron, Europe and the US due to the twin spikes of Delta and Omicron,” said Shashank Joshi, a member of the state government’s task force on Covid. He said it remains to be seen how Omicron will behave in India, where there is widespread “exposure” to the Delta variant. “Currently, delta derivatives, descendants of the delta, are the main form in circulation in India.

Omicron is rapidly replacing deltas in other parts of the world, but there is no way to predict how delta derivatives and Omicron behave.”

Also, India has hybrid immunity. “Sero surveys in Mumbai and Delhi have revealed that more than 90% of the population surveyed was exposed to COVID,”
