Nirjala Ekadashi Katha

Nirjala Ekadashi is also known as Pandava Ekadashi or Bhimseni Ekadashi or Bhima Ekadashi because of a legend associated with Nirjala Ekadashi. Bhimsen, the second Pandava brother and vengeful eater, was not able to control his desire to eat and was not able to observe the Ekadashi fast. Except Bhima, all the Pandava brothers and Draupadi all kept fast on Ekadashi.

Bhima, upset because of his weak determination and insulting Lord Vishnu, met Maharishi Vyasa to find some solution. Sage Vyasa advised Bhima to observe a single Nirjala Ekadashi fast to compensate for not fasting all the Ekadashis in a year. Due to this legend, Nirjala Ekadashi is also known as Bhimseni Ekadashi or Pandava Ekadashi.

Parana means breaking the fast. On the next day of Ekadashi fasting, Ekadashi Parana is done after sunrise. Unless the Dwadashi is over before sunrise, it is necessary to perform the Parana within the Dwadashi Tithi itself. Not doing Parana on Dwadashi is tantamount to a crime.

Parana should not be performed during Hari Vasara. One should wait for the end of Hari Vasara before breaking the fast. Hari Vasara is the first quarter period of Dwadashi Tithi. The most preferred time to break the fast is early morning. One should avoid breaking the fast during midday. If for some reason a person is unable to break the fast during the morning, then it should be done after midday.

Sometimes it is advised to observe Ekadashi fast for two consecutive days. It is advised that Smarta should fast with family on the very first day itself. Alternate Ekadashi fasting, which is the second one, is suggested for sannyasins, widows and those seeking salvation. When alternate Ekadashi fasting is suggested for Smarta it coincides with Vaishnava Ekadashi fasting day.

It is suggested to observe Ekadashi fast on both the days for the staunch devotees who seek the love and affection of Lord Vishnu.
