After that these clothes have to be donated. On the third day, a statue of a gold snake (of one and a quarter grams) is worshipped and donated.

Narayan Bali
Purpose: ‘Due to the absence of rituals of a person who has died or committed suicide in an accident, his lingadeh (astral body) keeps wandering as a phantom and does not allow the birth of a child in the family. Similarly, it causes many kinds of troubles to the descendants. In order to get rid of such linga deities, Narayan has to be sacrificed.

Ritual
Appropriate time to perform rituals: Ekadashi and Dwadashi of Shukla Paksha of any month are suitable for performing Narayan Bali rituals. Do Adhivas (establishment of the deity) on Ekadashi and perform Shradh on Dwadashi. (At present most of the people perform the rituals on the same day.) If this ritual is to be performed for the attainment of a child, then the couple should do it themselves. Performing this ritual on any one of the dates of Shravan Nakshatra, Panchami or Putrada Ekadashi is more beneficial.

Proper place to perform the ritual: Perform this ritual at a holy place like River Arrow.

Method
Day 1: Take a bath in the first teerth and take a Narayan Bali resolution. Establish golden idols of Shri Vishnu and Vaivasvata Yama on two urns and worship them with Shodashopachar method. After that, draw a line from Darbha (Kush) in the east direction of those vases and spread the Kush north-south on it and after reciting this mantra ‘Shundhantam Vishnurupi Pretha’, release water ten times.

Thereafter, facing the south direction, meditate on the phantom in the form of Vishnu by performing Apasavya (Yagnopaveet on the right shoulder). On those outstretched Kushas, give ten pinds containing honey, ghee and sesame, saying ‘Kashyapagotra Amukapreta Vishnudaivat ayam te pindah’. After worshiping the bodies with gandhadi, make them flow in the river or reservoir. Here the rituals of the first day are completed.

Day 2: Worship Lord Vishnu in the afternoon. After that, by inviting 1, 3 or 5 such odd number of Brahmins, perform Shradh of that Vishnu-like phantom by Ekodishta method. Begin this Shradh with the washing of the feet of the brahmins and do without the mantra till the question of satisfaction (O brahmins, are you satisfied?, ask like this). Give four Pinds to Shri Vishnu, Brahma, Shiva and Yama with the name mantras. Give the fifth body for the phantom of Vishnu. After performing the Pind Puja, give them Dakshina to the brahmins. Give clothes, cow and gold to a brahmin. After that, pray to the brahmins to give up the phantom. Take water in Anjuli containing Brahmin Kush, Til and Tulsi leaves and give that water to the phantom. After that, the performer of Shradh should take a bath and have food. It is written in the scriptures that by this ritual, the soul attains heaven.

According to the Smriti texts, Narayan Bali and Nagbali fulfill the same wish, so it is customary to perform both the rituals together. That is why the combined name of this ritual was ‘Narayan-Nagbali’.

Nag Bali
Purpose: If a snake has been killed by an earlier descendant, then because that serpent does not get momentum, it restricts the birth of progeny in that lineage. He harms the descendants in any other way also. This ritual is performed to remove this defect.

Anusthan (Vidhi): If this ritual is to be performed for the attainment of a child, then that couple should perform this ritual with their own hands. If the ritual is to be done for getting a son, then doing it on Shravan Nakshatra, Panchami or Putrada Ekadashi, on any one of these dates is more beneficial.

Experiences during Narayan-Nagabali rituals: While performing Narayan-Nagabali rituals, seeing a scene of anointing on a real phantom and seeing the pranajyoti coming out of the phantom after applying camphor. ‘While worshiping the idol of Narayana in the Narayan-Nagabali ritual, I felt that ‘this ritual is really going to give momentum to the ancestors’. I am doing a ritual. In the end, after applying camphor on the chest of the idol, the life light was seen going out from the phantom and excitement emerged on my body. Then I was constantly reminded of Paratpar Guru Jayant Balaji Athavale.’ – Shrikant Padhe, Nagpur, Maharashtra
