Fasting story
Once in the mythological period, Bhimsen told Ved Vyas ji that his mother and all the brothers suggest fasting on Ekadashi, but where is it possible for him to do puja and not stay hungry in the fast.
Ved Vyas ji said that Bhima, if you know about hell and heaven, then do not take food on the eleventh day of every month. Then Bhima said that no one fast can be observed in the whole year, can it? It is not possible to fast every month because they feel very hungry, who cannot tolerate it.
Bhimsen requested Ved Vyas ji, there should be such a fast, which should be for only one day in a whole year and it leads to heaven. Then Vyas ji told Bhima about the Ekadashi of Shukla Paksha of Jyeshtha month. It is forbidden to take food and water during Nirjala Ekadashi fast. After taking a bath after sunrise on Dwadashi, one should donate food to Brahmins and then one should observe fast. One who observes this fast attains salvation after death.
After listening to the words of Maharishi Ved Vyas ji, Bhimsen agreed to fast on Nirjala Ekadashi. He observed Nirjala Ekadashi fast. Since then it has been called Bhimseni Ekadashi or Pandava Ekadashi.
