Mirzapur 2 on Amazon Prime from Oct 23 but expect a few surprises

New Delhi: Here’s some good news for the fans of the rustic Mirzapur series. Starting October 23, Amazon Prime debuts the second season of the highly popular web series.

Mirzapur 2 promises a journey into its stylish yet rustic world, where crime, drugs and violence rule and one needs to fight to survive.

The world of Mirzapur has become more about power, politics and revenge. It is about conspiracies and people double-crossing each other while carrying guns that they won’t hesitate to use. This season doesn’t stay confined to the violent world of Mirzapur; it takes us to the power corridors where a nexus between politics and criminals prevails.

The second season also takes us to a land beyond Mirzapur, a place which has its own set of violent and powerful families running various illegal businesses. The women of Mirzapur have become bolder and more complex. They will not hesitate in using any means to achieve their goals. Who will win in the end? Is there anyone left to challenge the Tripathis?

Starring Pankaj Tripathi, Ali Fazal, Divyenndu, Shweta Tripathi Sharma, Rasika Dugal, Harshita Shekhar Gaur, Sheeba Chaddha and Rajesh Tailang in the lead roles, the sequel will also feature Vijay Varma, Amit Sial, Priyanshu Painyuli and Isha Talwar.

Actor Shweta Tripathi Sharma spoke about the drastic transformation of her character Gajgamini “Golu” Gupta in the second season of Mirzapur. In this season, the goody-two-shoes Golu has turned the tables. In Season 1, her character was that of a docile woman, but things changed dramatically for her after she lost her sister (Shriya Pilgaonkar) and lover (Vikrant Massey) in last season’s finale.

Shweta said she would like to “give the entire credit to Munna” as he was responsible for the killing of her loved ones. Shweta shared that with shows like Mirzapur and The Family Man, she has realised that we usually demarcate the good from the bad quite casually, but as a society we need to understand that distinction more thoroughly. “Like Golu (in Season 1), she was a happy-go-lucky girl who loved books and poetry. But if you choke someone in such situations, they are going to retaliate in some form.”

On the impact of OTT, she said that there are “many stories to be told” in this space. In terms of the fame and fandom of Mirzapur, and the many trends it started in the web space, she said, “Huge credit goes to the makers.”

Ever since the first season of Mirzapur, shows set in the heartland that are high on violence and gore seem to be the new flavour. It could be said that the success of Mirzapur gave them a template to follow. “When Sacred Games released, I really think they raised the bar and when one show creates that benchmark, everyone feels like they need to up their game. So if Mirzapur does the same thing, that makes us very happy,” Shweta shared.

Even though Mirzapur (the town in the show) is run by men, the show respects its female characters and gives them full-fledged story arcs. They aren’t playing second fiddle to the leading men, and they certainly aren’t there to just add a love angle.

Shweta, while talking about it, said that she would not have taken up this role if she felt that she “could not do justice to the part, or if the part wasn’t doing justice to us.” She added, “No matter what we do, screen time, of course, is important but what’s more important is that what we are doing with the time that we are getting on screen.”
