QS World University Rankings: IIT-Bombay at number two in India, MU at 36

New Delhi: IIT-Bombay has secured the second position in India in the 2023 edition of the QS World University Rankings, with the University of Mumbai showing no improvement as compared to the last two years. This year there are 41 universities in India in the QS ranking list, and IIT-Bombay is at second place while MU is at 36th position.

Nationally, MU’s position ranked 33rd among 36 Indian universities listed for the 22nd edition of the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings. In the 2021 edition, MU was ranked 26th among 28 listed Indian universities, and in the 2020 edition, it was ranked 23rd among 28 Indian universities.

Globally, 1,500 institutions from around the world were listed in the QS World University Rankings. MU remained in the 1,000-1,200 ranking range for the third year in a row. In 2019 and 2020, the varsity maintained its ranking position in the range of 801-1,000 globally.

Globally, the Indian Institute of Technology-Bombay secured the 172nd rank in the 2023 edition, an improvement of five places as compared to 2022.

Professor Subhasis Choudhary, Director, IIT-B, said, “While it is good to know that IIT-Bombay has further improved its international rankings, our collective endeavor to achieve excellence in teaching, research and industry continues. I see a bright future ahead for IIT-Bombay.

The QS World University Rankings for 2023 were announced on Wednesday, according to which the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bengaluru is the number one university in India. There has been a significant increase of 31 places in the ranking of IISc as compared to the previous year. It is followed by IITs of Mumbai and IITs of Delhi in second and third place.

For the third year in a row, OP Jindal’s Global University of Haryana achieved the highest ranking (in the 651-700 range) among private institutions/universities in India. Manipal Academy of Higher Education and Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani maintained their rankings in the 751-800 and 1,001-1,200 ranges respectively this year.

This year, seven new Indian universities debuted in the QS World University Rankings—IIT-Indore, University of Madras, IIT-BHU, Chandigarh University, Tiruchirappalli National Institute of Technology (NIT), Shoolini University of Biotechnology and Management Sciences, and Sathyabama Institute.
