Assam Rifles Public School, Shillong becomes the first Khelo India Sports School of the Northeast Region

New Delhi: The Union Youth Program and Sports Minister, Mr. Kiren Rijiju launched the Assam Rifles Public School (ARPS) as a Khelo India Sports School in Shillong on Monday. Currently, nine (9) sports schools have been approved across the country, out of which five (5) are managed by the Defense and Para-military Forces. Asam Rifles Public School announced under the Khelo India Scheme in the North Eastern Region. Is the first sports school to be held.

This school will bear the expenses of living, eating, education expenses, participation in competitions, insurance and medical, sports-related training and support, salaries of trainers and support staff, sports equipment and other allied activities related to sports. Khelo India Sports School aims to coordinate sports with education and in the process develop sports in the country and overall improve the performance and attitude of athletes. The school will also help in identifying and uplifting the talent in the northeast, rural or tribal areas.

Rijiju said, “This is the beginning of a historic journey of Assam Rifles Public School and this Khelo India Sports Center will showcase the talent of young boys and girls, who will go on to medal at the Olympics.”

The Union Minister also appreciated the efforts of Lieutenant General Sukhdeep Sangwan, Director General of Assam Rifles, for bringing many positive changes in this school. He said, “Sports have always been an integral part of this school and it will prepare future winners. I must acknowledge the efforts of Lieutenant General Sukhdeep Sangwan in bringing tremendous changes in this school through various initiatives over the years. This sports school will be like an additional crown in the achievements of this school and it will prove to be very helpful in furthering Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi’s vision of making India an important sports power. “

To have a good track record in education and sports, to be equipped with adequate facilities for eating and lodging (hostels), adequate space to develop sports facilities and an inter-ministerial partnership between Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports and Ministry of Home Affairs The Assam Rifles Public School was designated as a Khelo India Sports School due to its inclination towards the development of the Olympic Games. The disciplines set for this school are archery, athletics and fencing, which will include a total of 100 athletes (boys and girls in equal proportion) for the first year.
