Corona Vaccine Update: Approval for use of ‘Covishield’ in emergency

New Delhi: Indians who are under stress due to Corona’s havoc have received good news on the new year. The Committee of Experts of the Central Pharmaceutical Standards Control Organization (CDSCO) of the Government of India on Friday approved the emergency use of Covid-19 Vaccine Covishield. This will be the country’s first corona vaccine to be used for emergency use. This recommendation of the expert panel is made by Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI) V.G. Somani will be sent. DCGI will decide on the final approval.

The Oxford vaccine has been produced by the Serum Institute of India (SII) in India. SII is the world’s largest vaccine manufacturer. The vaccine, developed by scientists at Oxford University and manufactured by AstraZeneca, was approved by the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) of Britain on Wednesday. After the approval of the vaccine in India, it is expected that the government may soon start a vaccination campaign.

The Committee of Experts for the Covid-19 of the Central Drugs Standard Control Organization decided to allow the Oxford vaccine after an important meeting on Friday. Now the way of emergency use of this vaccine is almost cleared. The vaccination campaign will be launched after clearance from DCGI.

Pune-based Serum Institute of India is the world’s largest vaccine manufacturer and has tied up with AstraZeneca for the production of Covishield. The Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency of Britain on Wednesday approved a vaccine developed by Oxford University scientists and manufactured by AstraZeneca.

CDSCO’s Covid-19 Subject Expert Committee on Wednesday considered its application to approve the emergency use of the SII vaccine and reviewed the matter once again on Friday. CDSCO had previously sought additional security and immunity information from SII. Sources said that after SII’s application, the committee has also started considering Bharat Biotech’s application to approve the emergency use of Covid-19 anti-Covid vaccine, but a final decision in the case has not been taken.

Serum has 50 million doses
Serum Institute CEO Adar Poonawala said on Monday that SII currently has 4-5 crore Covishield supplements. He hoped that soon the government would approve ‘Covishield’ for emergency use. Adar Poonawala said, “We already have 4-5 crore doses of Covishield. Once we get the regulatory approval in a few days, then after that the government will have the responsibility of how and how soon it buys it. We will make 300 million doses by July 2021. “He further said that India is a part of Covax. Because of this, 50 percent of what we make will be for India and covacs countries. India is a country with a large population and may give India the first dose of 50 million.
