Pleased with this, Lord Vishnu gave King Bali to Hades and asked him to ask for a boon, then he told Shri Hari that just as you reside in Devlok with the gods, in the same way you stay with me in Hades for a few days. Reside. After this, the day Lord Vishnu reached the Hades with all the gods and goddesses, that day was the day of Devshayani Ekadashi.

According to Brahmavaivarta Purana, once Yoganidra did severe penance to get the blessings of Lord Vishnu, due to which, when Lord Vishnu asked him to ask for a boon, being pleased, he asked to place himself in his limbs. After this Lord Vishnu placed Yoganidra in his eyes and said that you will remain in my eyes for four months of the year. It is believed that for the four months during which Lord Vishnu stays in Yoga Nidra, Lord Shiva does the work of governing the creation.

According to another legend, once Devrishi Naradji expressed his eagerness to know about this Ekadashi from Brahmaji, then Brahmaji told him that a Chakravarti emperor named Mandhata reigned in Satyuga. People were very happy in his kingdom. The king was unaware that there was going to be a severe famine in his kingdom soon.

There was a severe famine in his kingdom due to lack of rain for three years. This caused uproar all around. There has been a decrease in all the sacrifices, Havan, Pind Daan, Katha Vrat etc. of the religious side. The sad king started thinking that after all, what sin have I committed, for which the whole people are getting punished. Then to find a way to get rid of this suffering, the king went towards the forest with the army. There he reached the ashram of sage Angira, son of Brahmaji, and bowed down to him and told all the things. When he asked the sage how to solve the problems, then the sage said – Rajan! The best of all ages is the golden age. There is a severe punishment for even a small sin.

Sage Angira said that one should observe fast on Ekadashi of Shukla Paksha of Ashadha month. There will definitely be rain due to the effect of this fast. The king returned to the capital of his kingdom and observed Padma Ekadashi with all the four varnas with full devotion.
