Delhi Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena has approved the proposal to convene the first meeting of the MCD on Friday, January 6, 2023, in exercise of the powers vested under Section 73 of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi Act, 1957. said the Secretariat of the L-G.
The first session will be held nearly a month after the Aam Aadmi Party won the December 7 municipal elections, securing a majority in 134 wards out of 250. While the BJP won 104 seats, nine went to the Congress and the rest to independents.
In its first year, according to the rules, the mayor will be a woman. Fifty percent of the seats in municipal elections are reserved for women. Out of 134 elected councilors of AAP, 71 are women.
The proposal to convene the first meeting of the civic body was taken to the urban development department by the commissioner (MCD) on December 12, with the LG’s approval requested.
“Subsequently, the file, approved by Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia, who is Minister (Urban Development) and Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, was received at Raj Niwas on December 14, and the LG gave its approval on the same day,” officials said.
According to the Delhi Municipal Corporation Act, “The Corporation shall, at its first meeting in every year, elect one of its members to be the Chairperson, to be known as the Mayor and another member to be the Deputy Mayor of the Corporation.” The Act also states that the presiding officer at the meeting for election of mayor shall be a councilor who is not a candidate for such election and shall be nominated by the LG.
In addition to the elected members, the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha MPs from Delhi, and one-fifth (14) of the members of the Delhi Legislative Assembly are nominated by the Speaker by rotation every year, and 10 are nominated by the Administrator.
