Heavy rain and thunderstorms lash many parts of Delhi-NCR; southwest monsoon reaches Kerala

People in Delhi-NCR got some relief from the scorching heat today, June 4, as a new western disturbance arrived. Heavy rain and strong thunderstorms lashed many parts of the region. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for two days.

Meanwhile, the IMD said the southwest (summer) monsoon has reached Kerala.

The Meteorological Department said in a post on X today, “Heavy to very heavy rainfall (7-20 cm) is likely at isolated places over Kerala and Karnataka, and heavy rainfall (7-20 cm) at isolated places over Tamil Nadu. Heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely to continue over Northeast India for the next 5-6 days.”

It further stated, “Moderate to severe thunderstorm activity with wind speeds reaching 50-60 kmph is likely over many parts of northwest, central, and eastern India and south peninsular India during the next 2-3 days of the week.”

Regional Weather Updates by IMD

Northeast India

According to the IMD, light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds is expected over Assam and Meghalaya during June 6-7; Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura during June 5-7; and Assam and Meghalaya during June 4-5.

Heavy rainfall is also expected over Arunachal Pradesh on June 5 and 10; Assam and Meghalaya on June 4-5 and June 10; Isolated very heavy rainfall is also likely over Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura during June 5-10; over Arunachal Pradesh during June 4 and June 6-9; and over Assam and Meghalaya during June 6-9.

Southern Peninsular India

Light to moderate rainfall with thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds is likely over Telangana on June 4; over coastal Andhra Pradesh and Yanam, coastal Karnataka, northern interior Karnataka, Rayalaseema and Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal during June 4-8; over Kerala and Mahe and Lakshadweep during June 4-5; over Telangana during June 5-8; and over southern interior Karnataka during June 4-5.

Eastern India

Light rain is likely over the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Light to moderate rain with thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds are likely on June 4; Gangetic West Bengal and Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim during June 4-8; Jharkhand during June 4-7; Bihar during June 5 and June 7-10; Odisha during June 6-10.

Northwest India

Light to moderate rain with thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds are likely over Jammu and Kashmir-Ladakh-Gilgit-Baltistan-Muzaffarabad during June 4-6; Himachal Pradesh during June 4-5; Uttarakhand during June 4-6; and gusty winds are likely over Himachal Pradesh on June 6.

Isolated heavy rain is likely over Uttarakhand during June 4-5.

Isolated hailstorms are likely over Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit-Baltistan, Muzaffarabad, and Uttarakhand during June 4-5; and over Rajasthan on June 4.

Central India

Light to moderate rain, thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds are expected over East Madhya Pradesh and West Madhya Pradesh during June 4-5.

West India

Thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds are likely over Konkan and Goa and Marathwada during June 4-7; over Central Maharashtra during June 4-8; and over the Gujarat region and Saurashtra and Kutch during June 4-5.

Isolated heavy rain is likely over Konkan and Goa during June 4-10; over Central Maharashtra on June 5, and over the state of Gujarat during June 7-10.

Temperature Forecast

According to the IMD, there will be no significant change in maximum temperatures over Northwest India until June 5, followed by a gradual increase of 3-5°C during June 6-10.

No significant change in maximum temperatures is expected over East India until June 10, except in Bihar, where maximum temperatures may increase. Temperatures are expected to remain at 2-3°C until June 6.

The IMD said, “No significant change in maximum temperatures is expected over the rest of the country until June 10, 2026.”
