India inks ₹3,800 crore BrahMos missile deal with Indonesia

India has inked a deal to export BrahMos missiles worth around ₹3,800 crore (USD 450 million) to Indonesia, according to a report. India is one of the few countries in the world capable of building aircraft carriers indigenously.

Earlier on January 26, senior Jakarta officials had expressed interest in cooperation on aircraft carrier construction during recent meetings with the Indian side, defence sources said.

“Indian officials are also working on expanding cooperation with Jakarta in the field of shipbuilding,” they said.

India has successfully delivered BrahMos missiles to the Philippines, which placed an order worth over USD 335 million a few years ago. The delivery of the missiles has already begun, and more missiles are expected soon.

India-Indonesia Relations

Vietnam, Malaysia, Indonesia and several countries in the Middle East have expressed interest in the India-Russia joint venture missile system, which includes several components from Russia.

Notably, at the invitation of Prime Minister Modi, the President of Indonesia, Prabowo Subianto, came on a state visit to India from January 23-26. He attended India’s 76th Republic Day celebrations as the chief guest.

He was also accompanied by a high-level delegation, which included several ministers, senior Indonesian government officials and a business delegation.

Earlier on January 25, Jaideep Mazumdar, Secretary (East) in the Ministry of External Affairs, speaking about the development of relations in the defense sector, said, “Defense industry cooperation is one of the key areas that was mentioned. Things ranging from joint exercises to greater coordination and cooperation to greater interactions to more training exchanges, as well as repair and maintenance of common platforms were discussed.”

It is noteworthy that MoUs were signed between the two countries in five areas such as health, maritime, traditional medicine, digital development and cultural exchange.

The two sides also decided to work together in the areas of energy, critical minerals and science and technology.

Modi said, “Indonesia is our important partner in ASEAN (Association of South-East Asian Nations) and the Indo-Pacific region.”

He said, “Both of us are committed to maintaining peace, security, prosperity and rule-based order in this entire region. We agree that freedom of navigation should be ensured according to international laws”.
