MG Motor introduces the ZS EV as its only full-electric offering in India with a price tag above ₹20 lakh (ex-showroom). MG’s new EV could cost up to ₹15 lakh, which makes it one of the cheapest electric cars in the country.
MG Motor India is all set to launch its second electric vehicle in India. The carmaker has confirmed that the new electric car, which is expected to hit Indian shores by the end of next fiscal, will be a more affordable EV.
The electric SUV is priced between Rs 21 lakh to Rs 24.68 lakh (ex-showroom). The second electric car from MG Motor is expected to be priced much lower, between ₹10 Lakh and ₹15 Lakh (ex-showroom).
There is no clarity on whether MG Motor will move to an all-new electric model in India, or whether it will be one of the existing models in its global fleet. Rajiv Chaba, President, and Managing Director, MG Motor India said that the new EV will be a crossover. Apart from the ZS EV, MG Motor has two more plug-in cars in the global markets. These include the MG5 EV, which costs less than the ZS EV, and the MG HS plug-in hybrid model. All three cars are available in the UK.
Chaba said the new electric crossover will be based on the global platform but will be optimized for the Indian markets. “Our next product after the SUV Astor, we are thinking of an EV and now we are very encouraged by the government with absolute clarity that EVs are the way to go,” Chaba said.
“We have decided that we are going to introduce an EV by the end of the next financial year. It is a one-of-a-kind crossover and it will be based on a global platform, which we are going to develop and it will be all emerging including India. For the markets to be an EV for the mass market,” Chaba said.
“We will adapt this car to the range and to Indian regulations and customer tastes… It will be specially tailored for India. We will start working on it now. That is the kind of tipping point that is about to happen. We are talking if we can do a car between ₹10 lakh and ₹15 lakh which can give us a good volume. So hopefully, this will be our volume EV car,” Chaba said of MG Motor’s EV for India Emphasizing the roadmap, he said.
Chaba also said that MG Motor will aim to localize a range of parts for its next EV, including the localization of battery assemblies, motors and other parts.
