New Delhi: During the Covid-19 pandemic, EPF account holders witnessed a great deal of excitement about the Unified Mobile Application for New-Age Governance (UMANG), which enabled them to easily access services at home during this difficult period. Apart from the 16 services already available on the Umang app, EPFO has now introduced another facility enabling EPS members to apply for certificate of scheme under the Employees Pension Scheme, 1995.
The certificate of the scheme is issued to the members who withdraw their EPF contribution but wish to retain their membership with the EPFO to avail pension benefits at the age of retirement. A member is eligible for pension only if he is a member of the Employees Pension Scheme, 1995 for at least 10 years. The scheme certificate after joining a new job ensures that the previous pensionable service is combined with the pensionable service provided with the new employer, which increases pension benefits. Apart from this, the scheme certificate is also useful in obtaining family pension for the family members in the event of death of the eligible member.
With the application of the scheme certificate easy through the Umang app, members will now get rid of unnecessary hassles of physically applying. In particular, it will benefit during the epidemic and will also get rid of unnecessary paperwork. More than 5.89 crore members will benefit from this facility. An active Universal Account Number (UAN) and mobile number registered with EPFO is required to avail services on Umang App.
By successfully delivering this unique technology to the home of its members, EPFO remains the most popular service provider on the Umang app. Out of 47.3 crore hits received by the app after August 2019, 41.6 crore i.e. 88 percent was for EPFO services. With the huge increase in digital connectivity in India through mobile phones, EPFO is providing more and more digital services to its members in remote locations through the Umang app.
UMANG (Unified Mobile Application for New-Age Governance) has been developed by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology and the National e-Governance Division (NeGD) to accelerate mobile governance in India. UMANG provides a single platform on a pan-India level to all Indian citizens for e-governance services and other citizen centric services related to local government organizations.
