Punjab AIG Ashish Kapoor arrested for taking bribe of Rs 1 crore

New Delhi: Punjab Vigilance Department officials have arrested AIG Ashish Kapoor under the Prevention of Corruption Act in a 2016 case. AIG Ashish Kapoor has been arrested for taking bribe of one crore rupees.

Ashish Kapoor was arrested for committing an offense under Section 7, 7-A of the IPC, the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988, as amended by the PC (Amendment) Act, 2018 and 420, 120-B of the IPC. The then Station House Officer (SHO) Pawan Kumar and ASI Harjinder Singh have also been arrested along with Kapoor in the case.

It is learned that AIG Ashish Kapoor met Poonam Rajan of Kurukshetra in 2016 while serving as the superintendent of Central Jail, Amritsar. Poonam Rajan was on judicial remand in jail in some case.

When Poonam Rajan was on police remand with her mother Prem Latha, brother Kuldeep Singh and sister-in-law Preeti in a case at a police station in Zirakpur, Kapoor went to the police station and allegedly convinced Rajan’s mother Prem Latha that she would take them to court. Arrange for bail and acquittal.

Kapoor, allegedly in connivance with the then SHO of Zirakpur Pawan Kumar and ASI Harjinder Singh, declared Preeti innocent in the case. He allegedly obtained Prem Lata’s signatures on various checks amounting to one crore rupees, deposited them in the names of his known persons and encashed them through the ASI. Investigation is on in the matter.
