In fact, the Constituent Assembly of India accepted the Constitution of India on 26 November 1949, while on 26 January 1950, the Constitution of India came into force throughout the country. This is the reason why Republic Day is celebrated every year on 26 January. 26 January was chosen because on 26 January 1929 the Congress gave the slogan of ‘Purna Swaraj’ against the slavery of the British. Since then this day was chosen.

World’s largest written constitution

After India got independence, the Constituent Assembly was formed. The Constituent Assembly started its work on 9 December 1946. It took 2 years, 11 months, 18 days to prepare this largest written constitution of the world. The Constitution of India was handed over to the President of the Constituent Assembly, Dr. Rajendra Prasad, on 26 November 1949, so 26 November is celebrated every year as Constitution Day.

On 26 January 1950, the Constitution of India was implemented by removing the Government of India Act (Act) (1935) on this day itself.

India became a republic on 26 January 1950 at 10.18 am. Six minutes after this, at 10.24, Dr. Rajendra Prasad took oath as the first President of India.

On this day, for the first time as President, Dr. Rajendra Prasad came out of Rashtrapati Bhavan sitting on a buggy. For the first time on this day, he took the salute of the Indian military force. He was given the Guard of Honor for the first time.
