Independence Day 2022: History and Significance
India’s freedom struggle against British colonial rule lasted for more than 200 years and was marked by armed revolutions with several movements.
Great freedom fighters and leaders like Bhagat Singh, Chandrashekhar Azad, Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, Mahatma Gandhi and others sacrificed everything to see India as an independent nation. Apart from the rebellions of these freedom fighters, World War II turned the odds in our favor by causing significant damage to the British Army, rendering them unable to rule India.
Lord Mountbatten was finally given the power to transfer power by the British Parliament till June 30, 1948. However, seeing the impatience of the people, Mountbatten realized that if they waited until June 1948, there would be a catastrophe, which is why he extended the process to August. 1947.
It was difficult for the British to give up power and accept defeat, so they disguised it in the name of stopping the bloodshed. Mountbatten claimed that by extending the date he would ensure that there were no riots.
Finally, on 15 August 1947, the British rule in India came to an end. On this historic day, Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru unfurled the tricolor at the Red Fort in Delhi for the first time. After that, it became a tradition, and now every year on Independence Day, the current Prime Minister hoists the national flag at the heritage site.
