Updates on Greater Noida dowry case

A woman named Nikki was allegedly killed for dowry nine years after her marriage to Vipin Bhati, a resident of Sirsa in Greater Noida.

Nikki’s elder sister Kanchan, who was married into the same family, claimed that she was burnt alive for not bringing dowry of Rs 36 lakh.

Kanchan alleged that she was also beaten up by her in-laws over dowry demands.

Kanchan said, “We were being tortured, our in-laws would say they did not get this or that in the marriage. They asked us to bring Rs 36 lakh from our house. I was also beaten up between 1.30 am and 4 am on Thursday night. They told me, ‘We got dowry for one, what about the other? It is better that you die. We will get married again.'”

A video has surfaced in which Nikki’s husband and mother-in-law are seen dragging and beating her by her hair.

In another video, Nikki is seen sitting on the ground in a severely burnt condition.

With the help of neighbours, she was rushed to Fortis Hospital, then referred to Safdarjung Hospital in Delhi, but she died on the way.

Based on Kanchan’s complaint, the police have registered a case against Nikki’s husband, brother-in-law Rohit Bhati, mother-in-law Daya and father-in-law Satveer.

Her husband has been arrested, while the police are searching for the other accused; meanwhile, a crowd of people gathered outside the Kasna police station carrying placards that read “Justice for Nikki” and demanding justice for Nikki.
