Akash Madhwal was the star for Mumbai Indians in their stunning 81-run win over Lucknow Super Giants in the IPL 2023 Eliminator encounter. He came back with magical figures of 5/5 in the game which saw LSG bundled out for just 101 runs. Runs in the chase of 183 runs.
The young pacer has now taken 13 wickets in just 8 matches and to be more precise, nine wickets in the last two matches and the five-time champions have stepped up just in time.
Not many knew before Akash Madhwal’s heroics for MI this season. So here are some facts you should know about him:
- Akash Madhwal hails from Uttarakhand and became the first player from the state to play in the Indian Premier League.
- Madhwal has studied engineering.
- Madhwal has played 10 FC, 17 List-A and 29 T20 matches in his career so far.
- The 29-year-old has an interesting association with Rishabh Pant, who also hails from Uttarakhand, Madhwal trained with Avtar Singh during the early years of his career. Avtar Pant was also his coach before moving to Delhi.
- Madhwal was a part of the RCB camp as a net bowler in IPL 2022, before MI picked him as a replacement for Suryakumar Yadav in IPL 2022.
Mumbai Indians captain Rohit Sharma heaped praise on Akash Madhwal after he delivered a brilliant spell against LSG in the knockout match.
Rohit was also happy that the team persevered through the tough times during this season and took the team to the playoffs. “That’s what we’ve done for years.
People don’t expect us to do what we have done, but we managed to do it. He (Akash) was part of the team last year as a support bowler, and once Jofra went in and I knew he had the skills and character to do the job for us.
“Over the years we have seen many people coming from Mumbai Indians and playing for India. It is important to make them (youngsters) feel special and part of the team, my job is just to make them comfortable in the middle.”
They are very clear in their roles, what they need to do for the team and that is what you want. We enjoyed it (fielding) as a team. Nice to see everyone’s contribution on the field. Coming to Chennai, we knew that the entire team needed to come to the party. At Wankhede, you need one or two great performances, but here it is completely different.”
Akash Madhwal is an Indian cricketer who belongs to Uttarakhand. He was born in Roorkee in November 1993. He completed his primary and secondary education at Roorkee Public Senior Secondary School in Uttarakhand. After this he obtained an engineering degree. MI signed Madhwal for IPL 2023 for Rs 20 lakhs. He is the first cricketer from Uttarakhand state cricket team to play in IPL.
He made his T20I debut in November 2019 for Uttarakhand in the 2019–20 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. Later, the 29-year-old made his first-class debut in December 2019 for Uttarakhand in the 2019–20 Ranji Trophy. He made his List A debut on 21 February 2021 for Uttarakhand in the 2020–21 Vijay Hazare Trophy.
