In a memorable achievement, Pakistan’s Arshad Nadeem won a historic gold medal at the Paris Olympics. Nadeem broke the Olympic record with a throw of 92.97m in his second attempt. He also crossed the 90m mark in his final attempt, but the second throw was enough for him to secure the first place. Arshad thus became the first athlete in Pakistan’s history to win an Olympic gold medal. This was Pakistan’s fourth gold overall, while the other three came in hockey. The gold ended Pakistan’s long wait for an Olympic medal, which the country had not received since the Barcelona Summer Games in 1992.
Meanwhile, India’s Neeraj Chopra finished second behind Nadeem and won the silver medal. Neeraj registered a throw of 89.45m and had to settle for second place. Neeraj entered the event as the defending champion, however, Arshad Nadeem was a notch above everyone else.
After winning the gold medal at the Paris Olympics, Arshad Nadeem’s old comment about Neeraj Chopra went viral. Arshad said in an interview, “My message to Neeraj Chopra is that may our friendship continue to flourish and people remember us in good words.” (My message to Neeraj Chopra is that our friendship should continue to flourish and people should remember us in good words.)
