Cloudburst in Devprayag, Uttarakhand; Shops, buildings damaged

On Tuesday, a cloudburst in Devprayag in Uttarakhand’s Tehri district razed two municipal buildings on the ground and damaged several shops. An official said it also damaged pedestrian bridges, water pipelines and power supply lines. A cloudburst occurred over the Shanta River, causing huge amounts of fecal stones in its shore areas, said SHO Mahipal Singh Rawat of Devprayag Police Station.

He said two municipal buildings, including the multi-purpose municipality building, were protected from debris after a cloudburst.

The SHO said that several shops in Dashrath Danda mountain area of ​​Devprayag were also damaged.

However, there was no harm as people were vigilant and moved to safe places like bus stand and police station premises.

Municipal commissioner KK Kotiyal said the quantum of damage is yet to be assessed.

Home Minister Amit Shah spoke to Uttarakhand Chief Minister Tirath Singh Rawat and assured all possible help from the Center. Shah assured Rawat of all possible help from the central government on a telephone call on Tuesday evening.

Onshore bridges, water pipelines and power supply lines were damaged in areas submerged in the Shanta River due to cloudburst, an official said.

He said that a huge amount of slush along with the boulder, two municipal buildings including the municipality building were brought down.
