Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday launched Ahmedabad Metro Rail Project Phase-II and Surat Metro Rail Project through video conferencing.
Demonstrating the ground-breaking ceremony of the Ahmedabad and Surat metro rail projects, PM Narendra Modi said that the rail projects would “strengthen connectivity in the two major business centers of the country”. PM Narendra Modi said, “Ahmedabad and Surat are receiving very important gifts today. The metro will further strengthen connectivity in the country’s two major business centers – Ahmedabad and Surat.”
At the time of launch, PM Modi credited the BJP-led government at the Center for expanding the metro rail network across the country and said that over 450 km of metro network has become operational in the last 6 years.
“The best example is the expansion of the metro rail network across the country to see the difference between the approach of the previous Gove and the work of the present government. Before 2014, only 225 km metro line was operational in 10-12 years. Previous In 6 years, more than 450. PM Modi said that the operation of the metro network has started.
PM Modi said that work is going on over 1000 km of metro network in 27 cities of the country.
“More than 1000 km of metro network is in operation in 27 cities across the country. There was still a time when there was no modern thinking in the nation about metro network. There was no metro policy. Consequently, there are various cities in different cities. There was a metro of sorts, ” said PM Modi.
“We are developing the transport system of cities like an integrated system — it means that the bus, metro, rail will not ply according to their own design, but operate as a collective system, complement each other”.

Ahmedabad Metro Rail Project Phase-II is 28.25 km long with two corridors. While corridor-1 is 22.8 km long and runs from Motera Stadium to Mahatma Mandir, corridor-2 is 5.4 km long and runs from GNLU to Gift-City. The total full cost of the Phase-II project is Rs 5,384 crore.
Ahmedabad Metro Rail Project Phase-II is an extension of Ahmedabad Metro Rail Project Phase-I, which connects Ahmedabad to Gandhinagar.
The total length of the Ahmedabad Metro Rail Project Phase-I is 40.03 km, of which a stretch of 6.5 km is operational from March 2019 and the remaining 33.5 km is in an advanced phase which is expected to be completed by August 2022.
The Surat Metro Rail Project is 40.35 km long and consists of two corridors. While corridor-1 is 21.61 km long and runs from Sarthana to Dream City. Corridor-2 is 18.74 km long and runs from Bhesan to Saroli. The total cost of the project is Rs 12,020 crore.
Surat, with a population of around 60 lakhs, is the fastest growing city in India. The city does not have a Mass Rapid Transportation System (MRTS), thus the Center and the Government of Gujarat have decided to provide facilities in Surat.
