Shelley Oberoi AAP’s Delhi Mayor Candidate and Muhammad Iqbal Deputy Mayor

Shelly Oberoi, a first-time councilor and former Delhi University professor, has been declared as the mayoral candidate of the Aam Aadmi Party, while Aale Muhammad Iqbal has been made the deputy mayoral candidate.

The four names selected for the standing committee were Raminder Kaur, Sarika Choudhary, Mohini Jinwal and Mohd Amil Malik.

Shelly Oberoi won the Delhi civic polls from the BJP bastion earlier this month. The AAP had promised a woman mayor for Delhi after wresting power from the BJP in the recent elections.

AAP’s deputy mayoral candidate Aale Muhammad Iqbal is the son of six-time MLA and AAP leader Shoaib Iqbal. He won by the largest margin, more than 17,000 votes.

Senior AAP leader Pankaj Gupta announced the names at a press conference. The party held a meeting of its Political Affairs Committee (PAC) and after discussion, six names were shortlisted.

AAP leader and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal congratulated all the six candidates on Twitter. He wrote, “God bless you all for making our lovely Del clean.”

On 7 December, the AAP won the MCD elections with 134 seats, ending the BJP’s 15-year rule in the municipal corporation and reducing the Congress to just nine seats in the house of 250.
