The GNCTD bill was passed in the Rajya Sabha to give more powers to Delhi L-G

During the Rajya Sabha discussion, the Congress, YSRCP, BJD, SP leaders amongst others, staged a walkout from the Upper House.

New Delhi: The bill was passed by opposition leaders amidst uproar. The Rajya Sabha on Wednesday (March 24, 2021) passed the National Capital Territory of Delhi Government (Amendment) Bill, 2021. The GNCTD bill was passed amidst uproar by opposition leaders.

The Bill states that ‘Government’ referred to in any law to be passed by the Legislative Assembly shall mean the Lieutenant Governor. According to the Bill, the Delhi government should seek the opinion of LG before implementing any policy decision.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, who has been opposing the bill since its inception, called it a ‘sad day’ for Indian democracy on his official Twitter account.

The AAP supremo wrote, “RS passed the GNCTD Amendment Bill. Sad day for Indian democracy. We will continue our struggle to bring back power to the people. Whatever the obstacles are, we will continue to do good work. The work will neither stop and Nor will it slow down. “
