Yogi Govt issued ordinance on ‘Love Jihad’, provision upto 10 yrs jail

New Delhi: In the last few weeks, 5 BJP-led state governments – Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Haryana, Karnataka and Assam – had announced their intention to introduce a new law that would curb alleged cases of ‘love jihad’. The Uttar Pradesh cabinet has now approved an ordinance, in which any person found guilty for forcibly converting by marriage in another religion will be punished. The UP Home Ministry had already prepared the draft of the proposed law against Love Jihad. The original draft of the law, allegedly, was submitted by the Law Commission of UP in November 2019.

Earlier on 31 October, the Allahabad High Court ruled that conversion to marriage alone could not be accepted. Chief Minister Yogi welcomed the decision of the court, saying that those who hide the name and play with respect for daughter-in-law daughters, if they do not improve then their last visit to ‘Ram Naam Satya’ is going to come. He had said that posters of people involved in love jihad would be placed on the crossroads.

The UP Cabinet, chaired by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, on Tuesday approved the proposal of anti-illegal conversion law for marriage. Minister Siddharth Nath Singh said that the Uttar Pradesh cabinet has brought out the ‘Uttar Pradesh Law Against Religion Conversion Prevention Ordinance 2020’. Which is necessary to keep law and order normal in Uttar Pradesh and to give justice to women.

Let us tell you that the UP Home Ministry had already prepared the draft of the proposed law against Love Jihad. The draft was also sent to the legislative department for testing. However, in the draft law prepared by the department, the word ‘love jihad’ is not mentioned. This is being called the Unlawful Prohibition Bill. On Tuesday morning, UP Law Commission Chairman Adityanath Mittal also said that people of two different religions can get married among themselves, but the law in the new law is about illegal conversion. It has a provision of punishment of 3 years, 7 years and 10 years. The new law will prohibit marriage by illegally converting.
