Neither ‘Sooryavanshi’ nor ‘Pushpa’, Here’s Ajay Devgn’s Tanhaji Bollywood film is the biggest hit of the last two years

While Akshay Kumar’s Sooryavanshi, Allu Arjun’s Pushpa, and Hollywood biggie Spider-Man. This year, Ajay Devgn’s Tanhaji The Unsung Warrior has declared the most successful film of last two years. Also featuring Saif Ali Khan and Kajol in pivotal roles, the Om Raut directorial was released in January 2020 and earned around ₹280 crore in the domestic market with a worldwide gross of ₹3.67 billion ($49 million).

Produced by Ajay Devgn, Bhushan Kumar, and Krishan Kumar, Tanhaji has declared a blockbuster upon release and became the highest-grossing Bollywood film of 2020.

Sharing his thoughts on the achievement, Ajay Devgn told IANS, “Tanhaji was special because it lived up to the spirit of patriotism, had great dialogues, had great performances from Kajol and Saif Ali Khan. And I took my honesty. Tried it.”

He further added, “I am very happy that this unsung warrior got its due at the Indian box-office and was also appreciated globally”.

For the unversed, the period film is set in the 17th century and shares the story of warrior Tanhaji and his fight against Udaybhan Singh Rathore (played by Saif Ali Khan) to recapture the Kondhana Fort. Neha Sharma, Sharad Kelkar and Luke Kenny were also a part of the film.

Coming back to this year’s release, Rohit Shetty’s Sooryavanshi touched the Rs 195 crore mark while the total collections of Pushpa and Spider-Man: No Way Home have already crossed the Rs 200 crore mark. Featuring Rashmika Mandanna as the leading lady, Allu Arjun’s Pushpa has raked in Rs 219.68 crore so far, with its Hindi version raking in over Rs 60 crore.

On the other hand, New Year’s weekend helped Spider-Man: No Way Home to hit the 200 crore mark despite the coronavirus restrictions and competition from Pushpa and Ranveer Singh-starrer 83.
