Bengal Exit Polls Heighten Cross-Border Tensions; Bangladeshi MP Warns of ‘Flood of Migrants’ Upon BJP Victory

West Bengal Election Results: Most exit polls have predicted a clear lead for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in West Bengal. This has caused a stir across the border in Bangladesh, where a Bangladeshi MP has warned that if the saffron party wins the assembly elections, it will trigger a “flood of migrants.” Reported this on Friday.

A video has surfaced on social media showing Akhtar Hussain, Member Secretary of Bangladesh’s NCP, speaking in Parliament and expressing concern regarding a potential BJP administration in the state.

Hussain stated that a BJP victory in West Bengal could trigger a process of sending illegal Bangladeshis back to Dhaka.

Citing Hussain, reported: “If the West Bengal exit polls showing a BJP victory prove true—and if the BJP forms the government there—they will send all Bangladeshis back to Bangladesh. This would create a massive refugee crisis for us. We are deeply concerned about this,” Hussain said.

“We are situated amidst various regional realities. The BJP could ensure that a flood of migrants reaches Bangladesh. There is no guarantee that Muslims (illegal migrants) will not be sent back from our neighboring country. We must remain united,” the report further quoted Hussain as saying.

Reacting to this video, BJP leader and MP Nishikant Dubey launched a scathing attack on the Trinamool Congress over the issue of illegal infiltration, asserting that the party’s “enablers are gradually being exposed.”

In a post on ‘X’, the BJP MP shared a video in which a Bangladeshi MP is purportedly seen stating that if the BJP forms the government in West Bengal, it will halt illegal infiltration and expel Bangladeshi Muslims from the state. “Bangladeshi MP Akhtar Hussain stated in the Bangladeshi Parliament today that a BJP victory in West Bengal would halt infiltration and result in the expulsion of Bangladeshi Muslims; this is dangerous. The backers of the Trinamool Congress are gradually revealing themselves,” Dubey wrote on ‘X’.

On Wednesday, several exit polls predicted the formation of a BJP government in West Bengal, following the conclusion of voting across the state in two phases on April 23 and 29. Matrize projected that the BJP would secure 146–161 seats, the TMC 125–140 seats, and others 6–10 seats in West Bengal. JVC estimated that the BJP would win 138–159 seats, the Trinamool Congress 131–152 seats, the Congress 0–2 seats, Left parties 0–1 seat, and others 0–1 seat.

The P-Marq exit poll projected 150–175 seats for the BJP, 118–138 seats for the Trinamool Congress, and 2–6 seats for others. People Pulse projected 95–100 seats for the BJP, 177–187 seats for the Trinamool Congress, 1–3 seats for the Congress, and 0–1 seat for Left parties. The Poll Diary exit poll projected 142–147 seats for the BJP, 99–127 seats for the Trinamool Congress, 3–5 seats for the Congress, 2–3 seats for Left parties, and 0–1 seat for others.

The results are scheduled to be declared on May 4.
