World No Tobacco Day is celebrated around the world, choose life no tobacco

Raipur: World No Tobacco Day will be celebrated this year on the theme Commit to Quit Tobacco. World Tobacco Prohibition Day is observed every year on 31 May. On this occasion, awareness will be brought in the minds of the people about the ill effects and health risks of tobacco consumption. On the day of Tobacco Prohibition Day, an oath will be taken to never consume any kind of tobacco products in life and to motivate your family or acquaintances not to consume tobacco products and any intoxicant.

How dangerous is tobacco consumption. This can be gauged from the fact that there are 7000 types of chemicals in tobacco smoke. 250 types of chemicals cause cancer. 12.80 lakh people die every year due to the consumption of tobacco. Consumption of tobacco not only causes serious diseases like cancer, heart disease, stroke, lung related, chronic pulmonary disease but also the risk of serious infection and death is also high due to the pandemic like Kovid-19 currently spreading across the world. .

Better operation of the National Tobacco Control Program in the State and Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act COTPA, 2003 The operation of the National Tobacco Control Program is to bring awareness about the ill effects of consumption of tobacco products and to comply with the provisions of the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act, COTPA, 2003. To ensure that it is being operated in all the districts. Tobacco de-addiction centers have been set up in 24 districts for screening and counseling of people suffering from tobacco use and for counseling and treatment in relation to quitting tobacco.

From April 2020 to March 2021 in which 13513 O.P.D. Tobacco consumption has been given by about 1200 persons. Besides, tobacco addiction relief centers have also been set up in 6 dentistry colleges in the state. Between April 2020 and March 2021, 141 focal group discussions have been conducted. Along with this, a school health program has also been undertaken to bring awareness about the ill effects of consumption of tobacco products and to give information about Kotpa. Due to the lockdown this year, school health program has been done in 1581 educational institutions and yellow line camp has been done in 2400 educational institutions. During the same period, legal and challan proceedings for violation of the provisions of Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act, 2003, total 1115 challans were issued in all the districts and Rs 1,11,200 was recovered as per the information received from the districts.

For better operation of the program under National Tobacco Program, training of trainers and refresher training was organized on January 05, 2021, in which nodal officers, district advisors, counselors and social workers of all district tobacco control units were trained. For the implementation of Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA), 2003 and E-Cigarette Ordinance, 2019 were organized in two phases on 19th and 20th January 2021 respectively, from district level to Labor Department, Police Department, Transport Department, Food and Inter-departmental officers from the pharmaceutical department and health department and state level were trained.

Under the guidelines of Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA), 2003 and Tobacco Free Educational Institute, organized in two phases on 8th and 9th February 2021 respectively, in which 3-3 representatives from Panchayat Department, Education Department from all district And the Nodal Officer, District Advisor, Consultant and Social Worker of District Tobacco Control Unit were trained. Interdepartmental state level advocacy workshop under National Tobacco Program was organized on March 19, 2021. Similarly, under the National Tobacco Program, training was given to nodal officers of 28 districts, 2-2 dentists and counselors, representatives of medical colleges and dental colleges on the topic of Tobacco Session for Health Care Provider.

In order to strengthen the National Tobacco Control Program, work is being done on the “Bloomberg Initiative” proposal in the state. The representatives of IMA and IDA were trained in relation to FCTC 5.3 of 16 December 2020 in coordination with The Union Society. Interdepartmental training program under National Tobacco Program was organized on 05, 17 and 24 February 2021 at Surguja, Bastar and Baloda Bazar respectively. In which training was provided as a master trainer.

Benefits of quitting tobacco- After 20 minutes, increased heartbeat and BP start becoming normal. In 12 hours, the level of large carbon monoxide in the blood starts decreasing. Mouth test and smelling ability starts improving in 48 hours. The risk of heart attack starts to decrease in 2 weeks and 3 months, blood circulation improves. The functioning of the lungs begins to improve. Shortening of breath occurs in one to 9 months, shortness of breath occurs. In one year, the risk associated with the arteries of the heart is halved.

In the Global Adult Survey 2016-17, 39.1 percent of the people in the state were consuming tobacco products in any form. This survey is conducted by the Government of India every 5 years. In comparison to the survey conducted in the first phase in 2009-10, there was a decrease of 14.1 percent in the survey conducted in the second phase of 2016-17.
